Abstract
: Increasing exploitation of renewable energy sources, proliferation of electronic loads in the
electric grid and energy market deregulation are significantly changing the operating conditions of
tran
smission and distribution systems. To meet the rising energy demand in a sustainable way and take full
advantage of the intelligent devices connected to the grid, a shift towards smart grids paradigm is needed.

Smart grids can be defined as
electricity ne
tworks that intelligently integrate the behaviour and actions of all
connected
participants

to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity supplies
.

This
talk

provides an overview of smart grid technologies and
is divided into two part
s.
The first part
will review

the
characteristics of smart grids, with a focus on
the roles
played by

E
lectronic Power Processors (EPP
)
, which
are
fundamental not only to improv
ing

the
grid

efficiency, but also to avoid
ing

potential instabilities

of the
gr
id
.
A

new and cooperative approach to
EPP

control
is

discussed
, which takes into account both the
different types an
d capabilities of available EPP
, and also the intrinsically distrib
uted nature of the
application.

The second part
of the
talk

will highligh
t

s
ome examples of European

smart grid R&D projects, including
the recently established Norwegian National Smart Grid
Center
. The global framework offered by the
European Community to incentivize basic and applied research in this strategic area will also
be
briefly
outlined
.
