Genetic Engineering Exam Requirements

Any of the work that we have covered in the unit on genetics may appear on the exam. In
particular, you should be familiar with the following:

The definitions of basic terms used in the study of genetics such as

o

Phen
otype

o

Genotype

o

Karyotype

o

Clone

o

Gene therapy

The definition and description of

o

Tay
-
Sach’s disease

o

Cystic Fibrosis

o

Huntington’s disease

The content of
Cracking the Code

The content of any of the readings that you have been given

The systematic way that we a
nalyze a dilemma (to be reviewed today)

o

Identification of actors

o

Identification of dilemma

o

Identification and application of appropriate paradigms

o

Identification and application of resolution principles

o

Ability to reach a reasoned decision

The various ethi
cal issues that arise from our ability to manipulate genes

Definition and importance of epigenetics, especially with regard to issues of
prejudice

Dilemma Example:

Near the end of World War I a virulent influenza virus swept the globe. The infection it

caused was called the Spanish flu, and be
tween 20 and 40 million people died from this
disease. The graves of several

fishermen, documented to have succumbed to the Spanish
flu, have been identified in a Norwegian cemetery located in the hard
-
frozen, per
mafrost
region. The bodies of these fisherm
e
n are expected to be cryogenically pre
served. You
are sitting on a review panel considering funding a proposal to investigate this Spanish
flu virus. A team of scientists has proposed to exhume these bodies, ext
ract lung tissues,
and study the virus. They will use a combination of PCR and recombinant DNA to clone
viral genes, and they will also attempt to cultivate the virus in animals and tissue culture.
This will be done under conditions of strict biological co
ntainment. The rationale for this
work is that by studying this virus, the scientists will be able to learn things that may
prevent such an epidemic from happening again. Comment on the medical and ethical
implications of this proposal. Will you support it
?
