The eve of competition in Latino tones

Welcome party, which took place yesterday
at the hotel Academia, was signed with a
marvellous mood of all teams and
organizers.At the beginning, Rudof Bauer,
the hea
d of Košice self
-
governing region,
welcomed all teams. He emphasized the
importance of informatics and expressed his
gladness that the CEOI 2002 is held here in
Košice.

After the superb and well
-
equipped dinner
the cultural programme compered by Mrs.
K
ulcsá
rov
á and Mr. Vinař began. Mr.
Haluza from the Košice conservatory
performed several guitar pieces of the
Spanish origin. At the end of the
programme, Alena Faixová and Martin
Borovička demonstrated the art of classical
dance, performing cha

This Latin
-
American atmosphere was subsequently emphasized by playing football
at the neighbouring playground for more than one hour, deeply after sunset. The
result was not important for contestants.Nobody was representing his
own country,
but everyone was playing for the group, where being situated. The relaxation
acquired from this match certainly helped them to prepare for today
’s competition.

Norbert Wiener

Born: 26

Nov 1894 in Columbia, Missouri, USA

Died: 18 March 1964 in Stockholm, Sweden

He was a „wonder child“: an the age of
four he was able to read. His father,
professor of Slavic languages at
Harvard University in Cambridge has
led him to study classical
and modern
languages and, also, mathematics. After
finishing the secondary school he
studied biology and philosophy,
completing his studies at Harvard
University in 1912 with thesis on logic.
While staying in Cambridge and
Gottingen, he was influenced by B
.
Russell, G. Hardy, D. Hilbert and
L.D.Landau. Later he was a lecturer of
mathematics in Cambridge and Maine
(1915

1917), in 1920

1960 he worked
at Massachussets Institute of
Technology, becoming professor in
1932.

His first publications were devoted

to
mathematical logic, foundations of
mathematics, measure theory and
theoretical physics. He contributed also
to harmonic analysis of complex
functions, potential theory and
applications of Fourier series. He
developed the probabilistic model of
Brownian

motion, studied ergodic
theorems for stochastic processes.
During the World War II., he worked on
theory of shooting at moving targets,
the construction of guided missiles and
errors in wireless connection. He
formulated and solved the problem of
optimal
prediction of the random
process in stationary state. Also, he
explained the similarity between the
operation of computing machines and
the neural systems, and pointed out the
importance of feedback for automatic
regulation, and the important role of
infor
mation in organized systems. His
book „Cybernetics: or, Control and
Communication in the Animal and the
Machine“ was published in Paris in
1948. He established the foundations of
the cybernetics, exerting its reputation
so that cybernetics would become a t
ool
for studying systems of every kind.

For his prolific work (he was author of
more than 200 papers and he wrote 14
books), he became member of the
National Academy of Sciences USA,
obtained five scientific prizes and
medals and three doctorates. He spok
e
ten languages.

High Tatras
-

Vysoké Tatry

The town of High Tatras was founded in 1947 and it has a population of 5,500
residents. The administrative centre of the town is Starý Smokovec, which together
with Tatranská Lomnica and

Štrbské Pleso provides the focal point for one of the
three most important Tatra tourist resorts. High Tatras covers an area of 398 square
km and is one of the largest cities in the Slovak republic. It is located in the central
part of the High Tatras mou
ntain range and is comprised of the original fifteen
independent settlements that have gradually evolved into one integrated unit. The
central transport link for the town is based upon the "Cesta Slobody" road which
connects the western Tatra settlement of

Podbanské with Tatranská Kotlina in the
east. This transport link joins all of the other Tatra settlements with the exception of
Dolný Smokovec.

The High Tatras mountains are situated in the northern part of Slovakia, on the
border with Poland. In 1949 i
t was declared to be the first Slovak national park
(TANAP) and in 1993 it was together with the Polish part of the Tatra mountains
declared by the UNESCO the "Biospheric reservation of the Tatras".

The High Tatras were formed about 60 mil. years ago hea
ving up the granite massif
above the level of the surrounding land. It gained its current appearance by the
glacier activity 2 mil. years ago. The characteristic pinnacles (such as
Gerlachovský
štít
,
Kriváň, Rysy, Lomnický štít
), deep valleys of glacier origin (
Mengusovská
dolina, Veľká and

Malá Studená dolina
), moraines and mountain lakes (
Štrbské
pleso,

Skalnaté pleso
) were formed in the same way, too.

In the region, there are villages
and towns
wit
h numerous historical monuments
(
Kežmarok, Spišská Sobota, Levoča
) and tourist centres (
Starý Smokovec, Štrbské
Pleso, Tatranská Lomnica, Ždiar
)
.
