Installing POSTGRESQL on Windows 2003 Server

Step by step

1.

Start installation of
postgresql
-
8.0
-
beta2
-
dev3.msi

(I am pretty sure the same
will work on
postgresql
-
8.0
-
beta2
-
dev2.msi

but I didn’t try)

2.

Install as service,
postgres

user and all standard defa
ult settings.

3.

DO NOT install clusterdb from the setup, this is what is causing the “
Failed to
run initdb: 1!
” annoying error. Ignore the warning you get…

4.

After installation you will see in the
pgAdmin III

that there is a red X on the
server
icon, which

is
fine…

5.

Go to the parent folder where you installed and make sure you give the
Users

group all permissions EXCEPT
Full Control

.

6.

Uncheck the
Allow inheritable

checkbox, click
Apply
, choose
Copy

and then
click on the
Replace permission entries
checkbox and cl
ick
A
pply

again.

7.

Through the
Start
-
>
All Programs
-
>
Accessories

right click the
Command
Prompt

and choose
Run as
.

8.

Enter the service (windows user) user name you entered (
probably
postgres
)
and logon.

9.

Navigate to the
bin

folder under
Program Files
\
PostgreSQL
\
8.0
-
beta2
-
dev3

10.

Write
initdb
-
D ..
\
data

and
click
enter

11.

Expect this:

in next page

12.

Do the start database instructions
as appear in the output circled in red
(I tried
as recommended, obviously it doesn’t work

as is
). Just type:
postmaster
-
D

"../data"

(t
his step j
ust checks that all is in order and starts the db)

13.

Go back to the
pgAdmin III

14.

Right click the server and choose
Start service

15.

Create a new database from the admin and there you have it!!!

Still having problems??? No worries, email me

and I’ll try to help more…
