CLARKSBURG

A year from now, employees of two federal agencies will be searching for potential
terrorists from a new 360,000
-
square
-
foot building on the FBI’s Clarksburg campus.

The Biometrics Technology Center under construct
ion at the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services
Division will house about 1,000 biometrics specialists from the departments of Justice and Defense.

“Building completion is on schedule for the summer of 2014,” FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said.

Biomet
rics is a method of identifying people by physical and behavioral traits, including facial, iris and
voice recognition.

The field has grown since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks exposed weaknesses in recognizing
individuals who posed a threat to the
nation’s security.

The FBI is updating its Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System to include biometrics. This
new system

called the Next Generation Identification System

should be in place about the same
time the new building opens.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army’s Biometrics Identity Management Agency, or BIMA, maintains biometrics data
on enemy combatants that soldiers collect on the front lines.
