Deploying Borderwave Software’s Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition


Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition is a powerful defect tracking/collaboration tool
that software development teams can use to enhance the functionality and reliability
of their curren
t and future software products. This document is designed to guide
you through the installation and deployment of Advanced Defect Tracking, and
assumes that you are experienced with Microsoft server environments such as
Windows 2000 or greater. If there

Step 1



Determining System Requirements


Hardware R
equirements




Pentium III 700 MHz or greater

128 MB RAM

200 MB free disk space


Software Requirements




Operating System
-

Windows 2000 Professional, Server, Advanced Server,
DataCenter, Windows XP Professional, or Windows .NET Server 2003.


Needed Ser
vices


Advanced Defect Tracking requires the presence of Internet
Information services 5.0 or greater installed.


Step 2



Ensuring Internet Information Services is installed


NOTE: Before beginning this step, please choose Start, Settings, Control Pan
el,
Add/Remove Programs and scan the list for .NET Framework. If the .NET Framework
package is currently installed on your system and by following the steps below you
find that IIS is not installed you will have to uninstall the .NET Framework before
inst
alling IIS. This is a limitation of the current .NET Framework deployment
package. When the installation for Advanced Defect Tracking has started, it will re
-
configure the .NET Framework.


1)

To ensure that IIS is installed, choose Start, Settings, Control
Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

2)

You will see Internet Information Services in the list. If it is not checked,
please check the Internet Information Services option, and click Next. If
it is already checked, click Cancel.

Obtaining Software


If you have not downloaded Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition at this point, you
can obtain the software from
http://www.borderwave.com/Applications/AdvDef
TraWeb.exe
.


Step 4



Before Installing Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition


Before installing you will need to make sure that the user account you are installing
with has administrative permissions.


If you are installing to a production server it is re
commended that this installation be
performed after hours. Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition may require one or
more reboots during the installation process.



Step 5



Installing Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition


Run AdvDefTraWeb.exe. This will b
egin the installation of Advanced Defect Tracking
Web Edition. If needed, the .NET Framework may be installed if it is not already on
the system.


1)

Click Next.

2)

Read the license agreement, and if you agree to the terms of the license
agreement, click Yes.

3)

C
hoose a folder on a local hard disk where you will deploy Advanced
Defect Tracking Web Edition. (This is also the folder where IIS will map
your virtual directory).

4)

Click Next.

5)

Choose a Program Folder where shortcut menus will be created to start
Advanced

Defect Tracking, as well as the Database Manager.

6)

Click Next.

7)

File copying will begin at this point. When the first portion of the
installation is complete you will be prompted to reboot your computer.


Step 6



Installing MSDE, or creating a database on

an existing SQL Server


Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition utilizes MSDE or SQL Server as its database
engine. If you do not have SQL Server installed on your deployment computer,
please read Part A of this step. If you are installing Advanced Defect
Tracking on a
computer that already has SQL Server 7.0 or greater, please read Part B of this step.


Part A



Installing MSDE


1)

Upon reboot, login to the computer. You will see a dialog displayed
informing you that installation for MSDE is about to begin.

2)

The default installation for MSDE is c:
\
mssql7. If this is not appropriate
for your needs, enter another folder and click Install MSDE.

3)

This will launch the MSDE installation in the background.

4)

Note: It is important to refrain from performing any other t
asks on the
computer until this portion of the installation is complete. When it has
completed, a message box will be displayed telling you that the
installation was successful.

5)

After the installation you may be prompted for a reboot.


Part B



Utilizing
an existing SQL Server installation


1)

Upon reboot, login to the computer. You will see a dialog displayed
informing you that the installation has detected the presence of a SQL
Server.

2)

Choose whether you want to authenticate against the SQL Server using
Wi
ndows Authentication or SQL Authentication. If choosing SQL
Authentication you will be prompted to enter a user id and password you
have configured in SQL. NOTE: In order for the database creation to be
successful, you must be using an account that has
full SQL Server
privileges.

3)

You will be prompted for a reboot.


Step 7



Starting Advanced Defect Tracking Web Edition


1)

Upon logging back into your computer a database will be created for you
automatically. You can start Advanced Defect Tracking by select
ing Start,
Programs, Advanced Defect Tracking, Advanced Defect Tracking.

2)

This will take you to a login screen where you must enter a user id and
password. NOTE: Write down the user id and password that you enter.
This will be your administrative account

that you will use to access the
software from now on.
