During the course of a year, Kreissparkasse Köln
has introduced biometric Authentication
based on the ID Center of Atos. The project was
executed by Wincor Nixdorf. In doing so, the
institute is keeping abreast of a trend toward
using innovative IT solutions to reduce the
complexities of day-to-day work and to increase
convenience for its employees.
At the same time, the bank is pursuing two addi-
tional goals: Increasing security for workplace
sign-ons, while also reducing administrative work
and the associated costs.

The project
The decision of Kreissparkasse Köln to use
ProTect/Work Enterprise based on the
solution ID Center – Strong Authentication of
Atos emerged because of three factors that
got hand in hand: Greater convenience for
employees as they sign on every day at work,
combined with an increase in security and
even greater cost efficiency. At the same time,
the solution needed to comply with strict legal
requirements with regard to high-level authenti-
cation, particularly for operating online banking
Benefits for the

“All of the bank employees work with the new authentication
solution several times a day. The employees immediately recognized
the increase in convenience and we have been seeing very positive
responses as a result.”

Strict legal requirements to comply
with fingerprint authentication
The starting shot for this project was fired in
July 2009 when a pilot version of the solution
was introduced at 80 working places, together
with a Cross-Matching-Tool of ID Center to
ensure the integrity of the biometric data
captured. The technical challenge lay in the
institute’s own Thin-Client infrastructure, which
meant that a suitable driver needed to be cre-
ated on the basis of the necessary operational
security. Dieter Nonn, Director of Organization
at Kreissparkasse Köln, explains the complexity
of the project: “In individual cases, the buildings’
specific physical features called for additional
tailor-made solutions. The fact that we were able
to implement them in a timely manner is due in
particular to the strong collaboration between
the individual project teams.”
The software, based on ID Center from Atos,
uses Single-Sign-On technology to allow users
to access pre-established applications with an
easy-to-use biometric mouse. Before the solu-
tion was officially rolled out, the findings from
the pilot project were used to develop guide-
lines for its everyday use in the workplace. “This
allowed us to create a positive attitude among
employees in terms of the storage and handling
of personal biometric data,” continues Nonn.
Halfway through the ongoing project, there
was a clear decrease in calls to the Help Desk
regarding forgotten passwords, password
resets and the associated administrative effort.
“We expect,” says Nonn, “that we will be able
to reduce our costs by about 50 percent after
fully implementing the security solution, in other
words by about 245,000 euros.”
