Develop Visualization Tools for Information Display of PMU and DLR Data

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This project will develop
a
visualization tool

kit

designed to display real time data such as
Phasor

m
easurement data, dynamic line r
ating data, and other data using a custom dashboard / path
map
, and
gauges

or other display methods. Many new technologies with Smart Grid
implications are becoming availab
le to the utility industry. Effect and intuitive display of that
information is critical to using these new technologies.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Many new technologies such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) are being developed and
installed as part of the Sma
rt Grid Initiative. The data may be used to support many different
activities. The presentation of the same basic data to very diverse user groups is a significant
challenge. The
phase angle between station

buses is very relevant to system and operating

engineers with computer programs designed to model electrical system performance. But that
same phase angle means very little to a typical system operator. The system operator deals
with amps, megawatts and other

line and load values.
Displaying th
e pe
rcent of capability of
value is particularly interesting. Displaying the information generated by PMU data in a format
useable to the system operator is critical to successful future operation of the growing electrical
system.

ower Company is interested in developing a display library that can be used to display
critical operational data in an effective and
useful

manner. The library should be designed to
work within the OsiSoft Plant I
nformation System, and

within typical appl
ications

default dashboard that can be used to build display systems using
imported data
has great use potential.

PROJECT RESOURCES:

Idaho Power will supply a computer with our PI system installed for use in developing
the
vi
sualization tools.

ata for the PI installation will be included. Microsoft Office will also be
installed. Depending

on cost
,

industry standard visualization packages may be purchased.
Engineering support from IPCo and SEL will be available.
