This module aims to provide the student with:
 A knowledge to explain the role of micro-
organisms in natural ecosystems such as air,
 water, soil in association with animals and plants
 Explain the use of indicator organisms in
managing water quality
 Explain the process of waste water treatments
and bioremediation of pollutants
 Explain the use of genetic engineering and
biotechnology and the importance of plasmids
 in nature and biotechnology.
 Practical skills and techniques in isolation and
identification of microorganisms in the

Intended Learning

At the end of this module the student will be able to:
 Identify bio-geochemical cycles
 Monitor water and waste water quality
 Identify genetic engineering and the application
of genetic engineering in agriculture, medicine
and pollution control
 Understand the importance of plasmid transfer in
nature and medicine
 Identify common microorganisms
 Set up a bioreactor bioreactor to produce bio-
fuel alcohol from waste sugar
 Isolate naturally occurring plasmids from
bacteria and in curing bacteria of plasmids.
