O
n Thursday October 29, 2011 we successfully replaced the faulty Datatel SQL server
that had been causing so many
service interruptions
. We
successfully
move
d

the

data to
a newer server and brought

the system back online. However, this
action represent
s

only an interim step. We are taking steps to purchase newer, faster, and more stable
hardware for the Datatel Colleague environment in the coming
weeks
. We will

need to
complete one more migration once the
new
hardware is in place.

B.

On Friday November 4, 2011
GMC IT experienced

a hard drive failure in our
ImageNow application server. We are working now to migrate and repair this failure to
restore the system.

As we find more information about the nature of the failure, we will
publish this information.

Service will be restored as quickly as possible.

The President has recently approved a UFR to remediate all data rooms at all campuses.
In keeping with our vi
sion to build a solid network from the foundation out, we will
need to remediate our data rooms. Many of these rooms are not setup to accommodate
expensive networking and server equipment. The Engineering Department is currently
planning to have all of t
he remediation work completed by the first part of the 20
12
calendar year. These changes will definitely be an important component of bringing
stability to our networking infrastructure.

D.

We have recently hired
Mick Kirkwood,
a
senior
Microsoft Server Eng
ineer. Mick will
be actively taking over the administration of our server farm. One of our primary goals
involves

bring
ing

stability
t
o the server farm. As such, Mick will have his hands full in
performing basic maintenance and
update
tasks on our serve
rs. Over the next coming
weeks,
IT

will periodically need to perform maintenance
and software upgrades
on
certain servers to bring them up to date. Most services will not be affected, but we will
occasionally need to reboot certain servers, which will ta
ke them offline for a few
minutes. Prior to rebooting any servers we will send notice to everyone@gmc.cc.ga.us.
