What is Ohio AgrAbility?
The Ohio AgrAbility Program promotes success
in agriculture for Ohio’s farmers and farm
families who are coping with a disability or a
long-term health condition. We are part of a
national program that promotes independence
for people in agriculture who want to continue
to farm after experiencing a disabling condition.
Our program’s goal is to provide assistive
technology, universal design, education, and
resources to those individuals and their families
so that they can continue to be successful in
agriculture. The Ohio State University has
partnered with Easter Seals to promote this
program at the local level.
Why is there a need?
Agriculture consistently ranks as one of the
nation’s most dangerous occupations. Each year,
agricultural workers in Ohio experience injuries
that limit their ability to perform essential tasks.
Some acquire disabilities through off-farm
incidents, illness, or health problems such as
heart disease, arthritis, or cancer. Senior farmers
often experience limitations such as decreased
vision or hearing and loss of strength. By
helping these people maintain productivity, the
Ohio AgrAbility Program helps promote success
in Ohio’s agricultural sector.
Who benefits?
The Ohio AgrAbility Program assists those
engaged in agriculture who have a disability.
Some disabilities may be present at birth, while
others may be a result of an incident, illness, or
age-related condition. Through the help of Ohio
AgrAbility, farmers with physical limitations can
continue to maintain productivity and do what
they love to do—farm.
Why should I donate?
Your contribution will help the Ohio AgrAbility
Program provide to farmers with a disability all
of the following services:

s
On-site assessment and technical
assistance

s
Assistive technology, which includes any
kind of device, modification, or service
that will help a person with a disability
work and live more independently

s
Universal design, which is a broad-
spectrum solution that produces
buildings, products, and environments
that are usable and effective for everyone

s
Community-based events regarding rural
health care, secondary injury prevention,
and farming with a disability

s
Peer support activities
What is the direct impact of
my donation?
Your contribution will help the Ohio AgrAbility
Program provide to farmers with physical
limitations all of the following equipment and
technology:

s
Modified steps or handles

s
Hand controls

s
Lever extensions

s
Outdoor mobility aids

s
Motorized lifts

s
Smooth ground surfaces of entryways—
without stairs

s
Large handles on buckets, utensils, and
tools

s
Lever handles for doors rather than knobs
that twist

s
Light switches with large flat panels rather
than toggle switches

s
Accessible cabinets, storage spaces, and
work stations
