Biological Treatment
of Electroplating Industrial Effluent
Employing Coconut Husk,
u
nder the g
uidance of Dr. Joseph, The
American College, Madurai.

An experiment was carried out to assess the efficacy of coconut husk
on various abiotic parameters of electroplating industrial
effluent.
The study reveal
ed

that the effluent collected from electroplating
industry contained high
p
H, salinity, calcium, magnesium,
phosphates, nitrates, BOD, and total solids.
But t
hese abnormal
physico
-
chemical parameters
could be
significantly reduce
d
by

increasing the amount of coconut husk in the filtration column.
T
he
investigation suggested

that the coconut husk
could

be used as
biological agent to treat the electroplating effluents in order to reduce
the organic load on ecosystem.

Studies on Wastewater management in and around the Bangalore

City,
Under the g
uidance of
Sh. Sohan lal, Deputy Director,

National Institute
o
f Co
mmunicable Diseases (NICD), Bangalore.

The objective of the study was to make the wastewater to become eco
-
friendly by reducing physico
-
chemical parameters below the tolerable
limits. In the study,
wastewater samples were
collected from seven
different lakes (Nagavara, Belandoor, Benaganalli, Mysore, Ulsoor,
Peenya and Kodipalya) in and around Bangalore city.
It dealt

with three
important factors,
Isolation of microbes from the
collected wastew
ater
samples;
Estimation of physico
-
chemical parameters (color
appearance;

p
H; BOD; total solids; total hardness; hydroxide;
carbonate; bicarbonate; acidity; co
2
salinity; chloride; calcium;
magnesium; phosphat
e and nitrate);
Treatment of wastewater sam
ples
using
Pseudomonas putida

for the reduction of chemical parameters
(total hardness; hydroxide; carbonate; bicarbonate; salinity; chloride;
calcium; magnesium; phosphate and nitrate). After inoculation with
P.putida

into the filtered water samples, esti
mations were carried out in
two different incubation periods (16 & 36 hrs).
The investigation
suggested

that the
Pseudomonas putida

could
be used as a effective
biological agent to treat the wastewater
.

Study about the immunogenic
ity of synthetic peptides of

Plasmodium vivax

using microsphere as a novel delivery vehicle,

Under the gu
idance of Prof. D.N. Rao, All India Institute of Medical

Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

The aim of the present study is to find out the humoral (IgG) response of

synthesiz
ed peptides (Circumsporozoite protein, Merozoite Surface

Protein
-
1, Apical Membrane Antigen
-
1) against the
Plasmodium vivax

at

different stages. To achieve this goal, epitope regions of the
se stages of

P.vivax
life cycle was identified by immunoinformatics. Thus identified

sequences were synthesized using Fmoc chemistry method on a

automatic peptide synthesizer. After the process, peptides were cleaved

from re
sin and purified to get homogeneity using gel chromatography

technique. Hereby all the peptides were found to be 90% pure. After the

purification process of such synthesized peptides, antipeptide antibodies

were raised in the mice u
sing alum as an adjuvant and microsphere as

a delivery vehicle. Peptide specific IgG levels and peak titres were

measured by indirect ELISA methods. Hereby microsphere encapsulated

peptide found to be more effective to produce I
gG antibody compared

with alum.

M
olecular Evolutionary conservation of Protein sequences among

Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes

Molecular evolutionary relationship was analyzed between the
prokaryotic and eukaryotic organism (
Paracoccus denetrificans

and
Bos tauries
).

M
olecular evolutionary conservations were identified by
comparison of amino acid sequences b
etween these two organisms.
The study illustrated

the evolutionary relationship of two different
organisms.
