BIOTECHNOLOGY
What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is the use of
biological
systems
to make a product or solve a
problem.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Microbial biotechnology
•
Agricultural biotechnology
•
Animal biotechnology
•
Forensic biotechnology
•
Environmental biotechnology
•
Medical biotechnology
•
Biofuels
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Microbial biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
•
Historically, microbes (yeast & bacteria) were
used to make wine, beer, cheese & bread.
•
Microbial biotechnology uses these same
microbes: fungi, yeast & bacteria to
manufacture vaccines, medicines (like
penicillin) & anticancer drugs.
•
Bacteria eating virus approved as a food
additive.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Agricultural biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
•
The genetically engineered enzyme
chymosin
is used to make 60 to 70% of the cheese you
eat.
•
Bt
-
corn allows corn plants to resist the corn
borer.
•
Golden Rice
is genetically engineered to
contain
b
-
carotene which your body uses to
make vitamin A.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Animal biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
•
Biotechnology has produced new & improved
medicines & vaccines for animals.
•
Cloning techniques are being used to help
endangered species recovery.
•
Transgenic goats produce a nerve gas antidote
in their milk.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Forensic biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
•
Victim identification.
•
Criminal identification.
•
Crime scene analysis.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Environmental biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Imagine a world where :
•
electricity is generated from trash or animal
waste.
•
bacteria help clean up oil spills by eating oil.
•
bacteria recycle styrene into biodegradable
plastic.
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Medical biotechnology
BIOTECHNOLOGY
•
In 1982, Insulin became the first bio
-
engineered pharmaceutical.
•
The first bio
-
engineered vaccine was for
hepatitis B in 1986.
•
Gene Therapy
•
Disease prevention
•
Diagnostics
BIOTECHNOLOGY
Types of biotechnology:
•
Biofuels
BIOTECHNOLOGY
To replace fossil fuels:
•
Corn based ethanol
production.
•
Biodiesel from cooking
oil.
•
Methane production by
animal waste

Other Careers Related to
Biotechnology
Regulatory officials
develop the guidelines for biotechnology research and the
development of new products and processes. They work with company,
government, or university researchers to review proposed research plans and assess
the safety of resulting products.
Public relations people
provide understandable information to the general
public about new biotechnology products and processes. They translate complex
scientific information about new discoveries for nonscientists.
Sales people
work with the dealers and distributors of biotechnology products.
Patent lawyers
who specialize in biotechnology help scientists, companies, or
universities protect their legal rights to new discoveries.
