Human Machine Interaction (HMI): A survey


In this article,
James Cannan and Huosheng Hu

explore
d various literature papers that discussed

the
world’s current technological advancements and how they will impact on the relationship of Human
-
machine interaction. Their exploration loo
ks at how Human
-
machine devices, with improvement to
functionality and introduction to better sensory fusion, wi
ll ultimately bring intelligent machines
closer to humans. There is a strong human focus in this article on the interaction, and the u
ser
friendly development of it.


I found this article to be useful in better

understanding

how each of our senses respond

to and
behave in different

environment
s
, thus in turn allowing for better development in interface design
to secure a closer human
-
machine interaction.

As an example, Cannan and Hu touched on
brain
computer interfacing, focusing on non
-
invasive and invasiv
e surgery. Cannan and Hu note that the
invasive form

of surgery

usually requires the patient to have

electrodes surgically
implanted through
the skull and onto the brain,
in order to monitor activity. Prior to this development, doctors were
only able to mo
nitor neural activity, but with these advancements, they are now able to
communicate with existing brain tissue, which in turn opens the door to the possibility of replacing
damaged regions with microchips. It is this same technology that is creating the o
pportunity for
some, whom are blinded to partially recover their sight through the aid of a bionic eye.


Cannan and Hu referenced numerous reputable sources and gave great insight to sensory fusion and
the opportunity for advancement, with regard to our r
elationships with machines in all their forms.

The Properties of Intelligent Human

Machine Interface

Within this article Alfimtsev and Devyatkov take a look at the intricate properties of interface design
that assist in providing a more natural interaction between humans and machines. Properties
explored include,
absolute
response, justification, training
, personification, adaptiveness,

collectivity, security,
hidden persistence, portability and

filtering.

The primary focus on better
identifying these
properties

is to ultimately help in the design of a barrier
-
free intelligent human
-
machine interaction.

A
n example of this can be found in the exploration of data security property.
This gives attention to the assumption that a user may forget data or accidently delete it. In turn the
intelligent human machine interaction is responsible for advising the user

during data processing of
their mistakes.


I found this article to be useful as it places focus on the possible failures between a human
-
machine
interaction and where that intelligence can be implemented to give rise to a more intuitive
relationship.

I found this website interesting as it looks beyond the physical aspects of human

machine
interaction and explores

the internal roots that factor in how a
human may interact with any given
machine.
