OVERVIEW


Founded in 1921, Dorfman-Pacific Co. (Dorfman) began as a small woolen dress cap
manufacturer in Oakland. Dorfman has expanded and diversified its products over the years.

In 1988, under new owners, the company relocated to Stockton and added women's headwear
and a customized direct embroidery division.

Dorfman products include Stetson, Woolrich, Cappelli Straworld Inc ®, Tommy Bahama, and
Scala. An international customer base includes JC Penny, Marmaxx, Stein Mart, Tractor Supply
& Academy Sports, Lid Wear, Dancing Wools Trading Co., and FGS Inc.

The company recently invested in a new operating system (Alfresco) and software (Apprise).

The Alfresco enterprise content management system is libre software (free software = allows
users to have control in running and adapting software to their computing and data-processing
needs) for Microsoft Windows and Unix-like operating systems. Apprise, the company’s
Enterprise Resource Planning software, will address process improvement needs for the
national and international customer base. Trainees will need to be trained on Alfresco and
Apprise to ensure an efficient transition. The company is also updating its website to allow
customers to place orders online, and offer catalog customers more options. This service is
currently outsourced. This training proposal will give staff the needed software skills so that
outsourcing will no longer be necessary.

Retrainee - Job Creation

In support of job creation, the Panel offers incentives to companies that commit to hiring new
employees. Training for newly-hired employees will be reimbursed at a higher rate, and
trainees will be subject to a lower post-retention wage.



In this proposal, Dorfman has committed to hiring a Graphic Artist/Web Developer within the
next three months. The Graphic Artist/Web Developer will create a cohesive, user-friendly
website that allows customers to place orders and view products.

Training Plan
In-house trainers, and possibly outside training vendors, will provide the following training:

Business Skills: Training will be offered to Vendor Compliance Specialists, Accounting Staff,
Purchasing Staff, Supervisors/Management, Sales Representatives, Customer Service Staff,
and the Graphic Artist/Web Developer in varying degrees. Training will include Vendor
Compliance, Sales Strategies, Accounting, International Purchasing/Distribution, Inventory
Forecasting, and Customer Service Skills.

Computer Skills: Training will be offered to all staff. The new Web Developer/Graphic
Designer will receive extensive training on current systems and Alfresco. Intermediate Word &
Excel training will be taught to Accounting Staff so they can effectively use all the software
components. Purchasing Staff and Accounting Staff will be trained in Apprise Software to be
able to address international business clients. Digitizing will be offered to Embroidery/Digitizers
to prepare logos scanned into the computer and create digitizing programs for embroidery
machines.

Continuous Improvement training will be offered to all occupations. Training includes
Crestcom Leadership Training, Train-the-Trainer, Business Efficiency and Work Challenges,
Process Improvement, and Teambuilding. Training is intended to produce effective trainers,
improve processes, and develop efficient work teams.

High Unemployment Area
All trainees work in a High Unemployment Area, with unemployment exceeding the state
average by 15%. For these trainees, the Panel may modify the ETP Minimum Wage by up to
25% if post-retention wages exceed the start-of-training wages. Dorfman requests a wage
modification to $11.50 per hour for the 15 trainees in Job Number 2 (22% below the ETP
Minimum Wage).
