Course overview
: Many of the world’s pressing proble
ms are economic in nature and therefore
we need to solve these problems economically and soundly. Therefore, this course integrates
economics and engineering. Micro
-

and macroeconomics, the time value of money, bidding, and
estimating are combined to dem
onstrate how these variables influence engineering projects.

Catalog description
: (2cr.) Theory and application of engineering economics and systems
analysis to the design of environmental management systems.

090123

Objectives
: To educate the stude
nts about economics and the time value o
f money (e.g., present
value, future worth) for making cost comparisons
between financial, engineering and
environmental situations.

Desired Outcomes
: Upon completion of this course students should:

1.

Have an ability

to calculate the time value of money whether in the present or future
based upon single, multiple annuity, and/or gradient payment(s).

2.

Have an ability to select between alternatives from an economical and environmental
perspective
.

3.

Understand the concepts

of professional practice.

4.

Have some ability to
use Benefit/Cost Analysis.

Assessment Methods
: Your final grade for this course will be determined based on your
performance of homework, exams and pop quizzes/class participation based on the percentages
below.

Note that these percentages and assessments may change.

1.
Homework

will provide additional practice to solving problems in addition to those
examples covered in the text and in class. I expect that each of you will conduct this exercise
individ
ually and homework sets are due at the beginning of

class on the assigned date.

Any late
homework will lose 25% and students will have one week exactly to resubmit it. No homework
will be accepted past one week after it is due.

All homework is to be done

on 8.5x11 paper.

2
.
Exams
are important for demonstrating what you have learned.
Unless otherwise
informed,

I will provide you all the

necessary formulas.

3. The course will function on the
honor system
. The
re is to be no collaboration on
homework
, test
s
or

exams and no use of other
people’s

spreadsheets. If "group working" or
copying reports is reported to, or seen by, the instructor or TA, honor court procedures will be
strictly fol
lowed. Class policy is a grade of "E" (failure in the course) if Hono
r Court proceedings
result in a guilty verdict.

4
.
Attendance

is

strongly recommended and will b
e mentally noted by the Instructor.
Pop Quizzes as described below
will

be given
, probably

on days that attendance is low, resulting
in a lowered grade.

Anyo
ne absent during a Pop Quiz day earns a zero. If I am notified in
advance for an absence on a Pop Quiz day your score for that quiz will be the average of past
Pop Quizzes. Valid excuses must be presented for any absences.

5
. There
probably
will be
at le
ast
2
Pop Quizzes

and numerous times for you to
p
articipate

in class.
Remember you cannot participate if you’re not here.

If Pop Quizzes are not
given, their credit is counted in the homework.
