Cisco Networking I

Course description change


Classroom and Laboratory experience in current and emerging networking technologies. Topics include
a review of the OSI Model, OSI Layer Functions, Local Area Network (LAN) Switc
hing, Ethernet and
Virtual LAN’s (
), LAN Design, Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), Access Control Lists (ACLs),
Novell Internet Packet Exchange (IPX), and network management. Application of networking strategies,
networking management methodol
ogies, and network documentation will be emphasized. Four hours
lecture/discussion/guided lab a week.

course description

This course provides a comprehensive, theoretical, and practical approach to learning the technologies
and protocols ne
eded to design and implement a converged switched network. Students learn about the
hierarchical network design model and how to select devices for each layer. The course explains how to
configure a switch for basic functionality and how to implement Virtu
al LANs, VTP, and Inter
routing in a converged network. The different implementations of Spanning Tree Protocol in a
converged network are presented, and students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to
implement a WWLAN in a small to medium net

This Cisco course is taught in line with worldwide standards geared
toward specific Cisco and networking topics. A considerable amount of the course
material is online and controlled by Cis
co. There are upcoming changes in the
content and description of the standardized Cisco courses. The CIS department
would like to stay current with world standards
and certifications, and is
proposing this change to stay consistent with the upcoming Cisco
