Wireless Communication Technology Devices

As more employees
need

access to wireless communication technology
to
perform their duties, we would like
to remind people of the appropriate methods for acquiring devices, setting up service and the related OSU
policies and procedures.

There are two methods for acquiring wireless communication technology devices.

1)

An employee purchases a device (personally owns) and asks for a communication allowance. This is
primarily used for cell phones.

The
Communication Allowance

form is a means for individuals to receive an allowance, processed
through Payroll
,

so it is taxable, to compensate individuals for using thei
r personally owned cell
phones, internet access, and/or other mobile communication devices for business purposes
.

The
maximum total allowance is 85% of the employee cost

or $120 monthly
.
Policy FIS 1402
-
15 provides
detail
ed

information about this option.

2)

, or a

Fi Device

for 100% work use
.

For Laptops, iPads, and other similar devices, please contact Lisa Gillis in the Extension Computing
Technology Unit to determine the appro
priate device. Please complete the
Wireless Purchase

form and
submit this to Lisa Gillis. This form will need to be approved by your supervisor and the appr
op
riate
designee in the Office of
Vice Provost for Outreach & Engagement prior to any purchases. The form will
then be submitted to Network Services. When you receive your device, please contact the Network
Services

It is strongly recommended that you
receive

budget approval
f
or the recurring cost of a cellular
data plan BEFORE a laptop, iPad or other tablet device is purchased.

Either method above is strongly recommended for support and reimbursement purposes. If a wireless
comm
unication purchase is made outside one of these two methods, you
will not

be reimbursed for services
you personally enrolled in.

The data plans listed on the following page are
not

available with personal funds. Check with your provider to
find
out if they offer discounts for OSU employees.

iPad
Apps

We are currently working on a solution for purchasing apps from Apple/iTunes. For now, the best way is to get
an iTunes gift card using your department credit card, and use the gift card to purchase the App(s).
This
document will be updated when a decisi
on has been made that best meets everyone’s needs.
