Conclusion
There are many constructive methods
and techniques to build any space. Those
constructive systems determine and
characterize the environment which is
located and the personality and needs of
the people who will or are using that
space
In the following presentation we will be
talking about "post
-
and
-
lintel",
describing this method, it's advantages
and disadvantages as structural and
decorative elements.
•
Simple construction method
•
Upright members: posts, columns
or piers
•
Hold a third member horizontally:
lintel, beam, girder or rafter.
•
In this system acts two forces,
compression and tension.
•
Post and lintel construction
-
pieces must fit together exactly.
•
Support the lintel
•
Failure caused because excessive weakness or
lenght
•
Material must be strong in compression
•
Stone, Iron, Steel and Reinforced Concrete
•
Brick highly efficient, and monolithic stone columns.
•
Has to be able to support without crushing or breaking.
•
Bear the loads that rest on it
•
Failure: Material is too weak or too long
•
Materials
•
weak in bending: must be short. (Stone)
•
Strong in bending: Bigger openings (Steel)
•
Masonry Lintels are inefficient, but lintels of monolithic stone,
wood and stronger materials are employed.
•
Has to be able to bear without deforming or breaking.
•
Simplicity building time is
shorter.
•
The walls to fill in between
the posts are prefabricated.
•
Stability
.
•
The lintel will deform by sagging in
the middle
•
Limited weight that can be held up.
•
The small distances required
between the posts.
•
It’s not nearly as common as
platform construction.
•
The weight of each piece.
Nowadays,
most
post
and
lintel
construction
has
a
third
component,
the
wall,
which
adds
additional
support
and
hides
the
post
and
lintel
design
within
the
framework
.
It
can
still
be
seen
in
doorways
and
columns,
in
which
the
space
between
the
vertical
supports
is
open
.
The Post and Lintel offered a solution
for constructive problems in the early
days, it allowed bigger and stronger
buildings to be constructed. Thanks to
its simplicity it is still used in modern
architecture and the construction
systems developed form it, helped us
shape the world we live in.
