• A total of six discoveries were reported:
Offshore at Dawn (gas), Stybarrow (oil), in the Carnarvon Basin o
f
W
estern Australia and at Scallop (gas) in the Gippsland Basin o
f
Victoria.
Onshore at Eremia (oil) in the Perth Basin of Western Australia.
• Overall level of exploration drilling in the first quarter of 2003 (29
wells) is above last year’s first quarter (26 wells).
Offshore drilling activity (20 wells drilled) is at its highest March
quarter level for a number of years. Drilling occurred in the
Bonaparte and Browse Basins (2 wells each), Carnarvon Basin (10
wells), Gippsland Basin (1 well) and Perth Basin (5 wells).
Onshore drilling activity (9 wells drilled) is at its lowest level for an
y
quarter since June 2000. Drilling was undertaken in the Bowen
Basin (one well, Cooper Basin (1 well), Cooper/Eromanga Basin (1
well), Gippsland Basin (2 wells), Otway Basin (3 wells) and Perth
Basin (1 well).
• 2D offshore seismic survey acquisition decreased compared to the
previous December quarter 2002 and substantially up on the March
quarter of 2002. 3D seismic survey acquisition is slightly up on the
previous December quarter 2002 and less than half the level o
f
survey acquired in the March quarter 2002.
• Offshore development completions occurred at Flounder (2 wells) in
the Gippsland Basin, Minerva (1 well) in the Otway Basin, Simpson,
South Plato, West Simpson and Gibson (1 well each) in the
Carnarvon Basin and at Bayu Undan in the Bonaparte basin.
• Onshore development completions occurred at Big Lake, Della (2
wells) Moon, Rosneath, Scallop, Wolgolla and Verona (2 wells) in the
Cooper/Eromanga Basin and 2 wells were completed at Hovea in
the Perth Basin.

Highlights
Drilling activity
Exploration drilling (Tables 1−3 & Figure 1) for March 2003 (29
wells) is 3 more wells than the number drilled during the same period
in 2002 (26) wells.
Offshore exploration wells drilled during the March quarter 2003 (20)
is five more than in March quarter 2002. Drilling was carried out in
the Bonaparte (2), Browse (2), Carnarvon (10), Gippsland (1) and
Perth Basins (5).
One well was drilling ahead at the end of March in the Carnarvon
Basin.
Onshore exploration wells drilled during the March quarter 2003 (9)
is two less than the number of wells in the corresponding period last
year (11) and five less than the fourteen wells drilled in the last quarter
of 2002. This figure is the lowest since the seven wells drilled in the
June quarter of 2000. These wells were drilled in the Bowen (1),
Cooper and Cooper/Eromanga (2), Gippsland (2), Otway (3), and
Perth Basins (1).
One well was suspended at the end of the quarter in each of the
Canning and Perth Basins.
Development drilling (Tables 1−3 & Figure 1) activity for the first
quarter of 2003 (18) is up by four on the previous quarter (14) and
but down by five on the twenty-three of the same period last year.
Offshore, the number of development wells drilled during the March
quarter of 2003 (8) is twice the previous quarter’s four wells and three
more than in the March quarter 2002. Completions undertaken were
in the Bonaparte (1), Carnarvon (4), Gippsland (2) and Otway Basins
(1).
Onshore, the ten development wells drilled in the first quarter is the
same as in the number of the previous quarter, but is considerably
less than the eighteen of the corresponding quarter of 2001. Eight of
these were drilled in the Cooper/Eromanga Basin and two were
drilled in the Perth Basin.
One well was drilling ahead at the end of March in the
Cooper/Eromanga Basin

Seismic survey activity
Offshore, 2D seismic surveys recorded 4 649 line km during the
March quarter of 2003 (Table 5 & Figure 2). This is a decrease
on the 11 867 km shot in the previous quarter and an increase
on the 3 268 km for the same period in 2002.
3D seismic surveys were carried out over 1 500 km
2
, which is
almost identical to that carried out in the previous quarter but
again a decrease on the 6 641 km
2
carried out in the fourth
quarter of 2002 . The survey was undertaken in the Gippsland
Basin.
Onshore, 305 line kilometres were acquired in 2D seismic
surveys during the March quarter of 2003. This is a decrease
on the 580 km of the previous quarter and considerably
lower than the 933 km of the March quarter of 2002. The
data was acquired from the Cooper/Eromanga Basin. There
were no 3D seismic surveys carried out onshore which
follows the trend over the last few quarters.

Rig activity
The total number of active rigs during the March 2003
quarter was forty-seven, which is an increase on the number
active during December 2002 (38). Rig activity during the
quarter didn’t vary much with 15, 16 and 16 rigs active
respectively.
Offshore, the number of active rigs remained steady at 6
each month and inactive rigs between 1 and 2 during the
quarter.
Development drilling occurred in the Carnarvon, Perth and
Gippsland Basins with exploration drilling carried out in the
Gippsland, Otway, Carnarvon and Perth Basins.
Active rigs at the end of the quarter were drilling ahead in the
Carnarvon (1), Canning (1), Bonaparte (4) and Perth (1)
Basins.
Onshore, the number of active rigs varied between 9 and 10,
which is lower than in the same period last year (8-12).
During the first quarter of 2003, development drilling
occurred in the Cooper, Cooper/Eromanga, Bowen/Surat,
Surat, and Eromanga Basins.
Exploration drilling was carried out in the Surat,
Cooper/Eromanga, Bowen, and Cooper Basins.
.
Success rates
The success rates shown in Table 7 are based on the number of
petroleum discoveries and new-field wildcat wells drilled in
Australia onshore and offshore from 1990 to 2002. No
assumptions have been made about whether a ‘discovery’ has
proved or will prove to be commercial. Geoscience Australia
defines a discovery as a well from which a measurable amount of
oil or gas has been recovered and also includes those discoveries
inferred from well logs.
