Summer Assignment

2013

Physics Honors/Academy

1.

We will
not

be using a textbook as a primary source this year. Reading assignments, Class
presentations, and problem sets are all on line.

2.

Your summer assignment will prepare you to get the most out of this approach to learning
physics.

3.

Follow this process to access the software for the course:

a.

Logon to
www.njctl.org

b.

Select Other Resources/Course Softwar
e/Download Software

c.

You have the option to download the SMART Notebook Software. This will enable you
to see all the answers to Class presentation problems. It does take up room on your PC,
so you may not want to do this. It also gives you the option to

download Adobe Acrobat
(for .pdf files) or Microsoft Word Viewer (.doc and .docx files). You do not need to do
this if those programs are already on your PC. If you want the SMART Notebook, the
screen also gives you the process to get the product key fo
r the software. It is all FREE.

4.

You are now ready to access the Physics Course!

a.

Logon to
www.njctl.org

b.

Select Courses/Science/Algebra Based Physics/Kinematics.

c.

Select “Kinematics Chapter,” a
.
pdf file. Each topic has
one of these chapter readings

this will be your on line textbook. READ pages 1
-
5.

d.

Go
back

to the Kinematics screen and select “Kinematics Presentation.” You will have
the option to view this as a SMART Notebook presentation (which is what I will be usi
ng
in class), or as a
.
pdf file. Choose either and just
briefly skim

through the whole
presentation

we will spend several weeks on this topic, so don’t get overwhelmed.

e.

Go back to the Kinematics screen again and select “Kinematics Chapter Problems.”
Se
lect the word file and open it. Work Chapter Problems 9
-
13 (not Chapter Questions!).

5.

Feel free to look around the website to see what other topics we will be covering.

6.

On your first day of class, please hand in Chapter Problems 9
-
13. That will count as
your first
quiz grade. You are free to work with anyone to help you. Of course, I don’t want to see a
paper that was just copied from another student. And, one of the nice features of the course is
that if you’re not satisfied with your quiz grade, you
may take a “retake quiz” and the higher
grade will count.
