Background Info on Designer Babies

The term “designer baby” was first entered in the
Oxford English dictionary in 2004. This term was
surprisingly coined by journalist, not scientists.
Designer babies branched from Watson and Crick’s
discovery of DNA in 1953. Though designer babies is
currently legal in the United States, only a few dozen
couples, each year, does this procedure.

Benefits of Designer Babies

Designer babies has many benefits. Some
benefits are that…

The child can be made to save another’s life. For
example, the first designer baby born, Adam
Nash, was born so scientists could genetically
select his embryo so that he would posses the
right cells to save his dying sister’s life.

This genetic procedure could replace could a
gene that causes a horrific disease with a healthy
version of the gene.

Parents have the choice to enhance traits. For
example, parents could choose to give their
unborn child blond hair rather than brown hair.

Parents can alter genes .

Parents get the chance to screen for illness.

Cons of Designer Babies

Though designer babies have multiple of benefits, it also
has multiple of flaws, some of which are…

Designer babies might spark controversy (especially from
religious people).

Particular mutation can lead to a new virus or disease.

The level of biodiversity in the human race will plummet,
which can result in long term disaster.

Designer babies reduces the child’s freedom to choose
what he/she wants.

Designer babies might have a negative impact on the
society.

Current Usage of Designer Babies

To pick a child’s gender.

With designer babies, parents are able to
pick a desired gender for their unborn
child.

To save another’s life.

Designer babies allows for the selection
of embryos so that the child could posses
the right cells to save dying person.

To test new things on (to be an
“experiment guinea pig”).

Some designer babies are made to be an
“experiment guinea pig” to avoid the risk
of other people’s lives
.

Though designer babies has many uses, the 3 main uses are…

Scientists and experts expect many significant affairs
to branch from designer babies. Some things that are
expected for the future are…

For designer babies to be able to “cure” genetic diseases
in embryos by replacing faulty sections of DNA.

To alter genes for both therapeutic and
nontherapeutic

purposes.

To have “designer animals”.

For preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to screen
for any diseases and malfunctions in an unborn designer
baby.

To be able to do a complete biopsy on an embryo before
injecting it into the mother.

Considering that designer babies is still in the process of being
perfected, it possess ethical issues. Some of which are…

What are the moral or ethical limits of this choice.

Is there a moral or ethical difference using genetic

technologies to prevent disease and to enhance human

capacities?

Should we be striving to protect our
humanity from genetic enhancement?

What effect will human genetic
modification have on society?

Are the technologies of genetic
modification and selection safe enough
to be used on humans? Even if they are
safe, can they be morally defended?
