Courses required for the first year:

The Environmental Management and Forestry Program
does not require any particular courses for the first year.

Courses recommended for the first year:

One course in

of the two natural science
disciplines in which the student might be interested. Such a selection moves the student forward
on degree requirements and helps him/her identify the field of greatest interest.

Through the Cooperative College Program of the School of the Environment at Duke University, a student in a
year coordinated program can earn both a liberal Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana and either the
Master of Environmental Management or Ma
ster of Forestry from Duke University. This 3
2 combined degree
program requires three years in residence at Augustana College, followed by two years in residence at Duke
University. Students should have at least a 3.4 GPA at Augustana at the time of appl
ication to Duke in the
winter term of the junior year. Students also may apply for admission to this program in the winter term of
their senior year. While official agreement is in place between the two institutions acceptance by Duke is not
automatic, b
ut rather is based on the quality of work completed, a satisfactory GRE test scores and faculty
recommendations. Yet, in the 30
year history of this program, all students above a 3.2 GPA level (which was
the minimum until 2009) have been admitted.

ts majoring in one of the natural/social science, business or in almost any discipline will be considered for
admission to Duke University at the completion of three years at Augustana. Coursework at Augustana

include all general education requiremen
ts for Augustana's bachelor of arts degree and at least one year of
biology, including BIOL 220 General Botany and BIOL 380 General Ecology (BIOL 200 General Zoology or BIOL
387 Aquatic Biology are recommended) college level mathematics including MATH 219
220 Calculus sequence,
and MATH 315 Probability and Statistics I or PSYC 240 Statistics; two courses in economics, ECON 201/202

and Macroeconomics, and GEOG 308 Land Resources Management. A computer science course
(preferably COMP 211 Introduction
to Computer Science I), Geographic Information Systems and Remote
Sensing (GEOG 373), an upper level writing course (preferably ENGL 341), and a speech course (COMM 204 or
401) are strongly recommended. A good preparation in the social sciences is importa
nt even though such
preparation may reduce the number of advanced courses in the natural sciences.

At Duke students choose to specialize in one of the following nine concentrations:

Coastal Environmental Management

Ecosystem and

Ecotoxicology and Environmental Health

Energy and the Environment

Environmental Economics and Policy

Forest Resource Management

Global Environmental Change

Water and Air Resources

Students may also earn a cer
tificate in Geospatial Analysis in conjunction with one of the

Concentrations. How cool is that?

When the student has completed satisfactorily one year of study at Duke University and has transferred course
credits to Augustana to
complete the Augustana degree, he or she will be awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree
by Augustana. Upon satisfactory completion of the requirements for a master's degree, Duke University will
award the student either a Master of Environmental Management o
r Master of Forestry.
