Microsoft Language Bar


Microsoft Language Bar Overview

The Language bar enables you to easily switch
between and perform tasks related to entering text.

It
can be turned on in Word

by going to Tools and
selecting Speech.


Speech Recognition Over
view

The speech recognition feature allows you to
literally speak to your computer via a microphone.
With the appropriate system requirements, you can
dictate text into Word, or

you can switch to Voice
Co
mmand, so that you can access menus
.


Use speech rec
ognition:

Speech recognition is
installed in all Office programs by initially using the
feature in Word 2003, or by doing a custom
installation. For details see the Help topic, "Install
and Train Speech Recognition."



Configure the microphone and complete

training by
going to the control panel and selecting speech


Handwriting Overview

The handwriting recognition feature allows you to
input your handwriting, either by controlling a
mouse or by using a

tablet
. This input can be
automatically converted to ty
ped text, or it can be
left as an "ink object" in your own handwriting. The
handwriting recognition feature also supports
onscreen keyboards

as well as

a drawing function, so
that you can include hand
-
drawn sketches.


Using Text to Speech in Word

and Excel

The language bar features a
speak text
option

for
Word. There is a separate toolbar for Excel
.


Voice preferences can be set through the advanced
speech options in the language bar or through the
control panel.

It is important to note that t
hese features only
work on an accessible P
DF.
Go to Document then
select Quick Accessibility Check (Ctrl + Shift + 6)

or use the text select tool. If you can not select text
in the PDF then it can not be read out loud until
OCR is run. OCR stands for Optical Character
Recognition.
