Symmetrical Owls
Objectives: symmetry, pattern,
Materials:
brown paper 12x9
oil pastels
newsprint paper
scissors
pencil
12x18 blue paper
glue stick
Steps

To make a pattern, use an 8.5" x 11" sheet of newsprint and fold it in half
the long way. Draw the outline of a simple owl as shown, making sure the
center was on the fold of the paper. With the paper still folded, cut the owl
out.

Center the newsprint owl on a sheet of 9" x 12" sheet of brown paper and
trace around the edge with a pencil.

Draw the rest of the owl, start with the brow lines, then the centered
diamond beak, then the eyes and then wings. The goal is to have the owl
drawn as symmetrically as possible - what is drawn on one side of the owl
is mirrored on the other side.

When the drawing is complete, the students trace the pencil with a black
oil pastel. To color the owl, use realistic colors (brown, white or gray).

After the owl is thoroughly colored (no paper showing) students cut out
their owls. Glue to blue paper.
