The trainee will be primarily involved in the continuous improvement of
systems in terms of quality and throughput,
covering the range of
equipment and activities listed above. The trainee should hope to gain
experience in manufacturing and planning techniques within the unit.
The trainee will gain experience of working with many different levels of
personnel from pr
ocess engineers and supervisors to maintenance
technicians and vendors. There is also the opportunity to attend training
courses along side work colleagues.


Required Skills:



A background in manufacturing/electrical/mechanical engineering is
essential,



Should also be computer literate



Good communication skills



Ability to work in a small highly motivated team as part of a larger
team environment.

Working within the Quality Engineering Department the trainee will be a
member of a team of Engineers dedicated to ensuring that the Astra is a
“World Class” leading vehicl
e.

The trainee will have ownership of a specific engineering area within car
assembly. They will act as Product Engineer, investigating design
-
related
concerns and as Supplier Quality Engineer, liasing with the suppliers of
component parts. As we strive t
o raise the standards, the trainee will also
be involved in vehicle warranty.


Key responsibilities:




Problem analysis of supplied components from root cause analysis to
solution implementation.



Liaison with GM suppliers worldwide.



Visits to supplier plant
s to resolve problems at source.



Investigation of failed components from production.



Resolution of production problems.



Regular reviews with senior management.


Required Skills:




Problem solving skills



Basic knowledge of engineering drawings would be bene
ficial.



Excellent communication skills.



Computer literate.



Good presentation skills.



Expected to use own initiative without the need for constant
supervision

The Maintenance division is responsible for the upkeep of all
mechanical/ electrical equipment in the General Assembly department. As
a member o
f this division, the trainee will join the maintenance support
team and provide assistance to lean maintenance activities throughout the
year and continue the high commitment to Site Development. The trainee
will be involved with problem solving assignment
s, data tracking and the
organising of maintenance activities.

Undertake problem

solving assignments that will focus on safety,
quality and up time improvements.



Assist in the development and execution of preventive and predictive
maintenance programmes in line with objectives to meet Business Plan
targets.



Take on the role as GA Energy Management representative and arrange
the completion of energy saving initiatives.



Assist the maintenance team with the organisation and planning of

equipment and facilities installation, commissioning and modification.



Assist in the development of estimates, specifications, analysis and cost
justification for the above.



Assist with departmental administration work.



Liase with suppliers/contractors


Throughout the year, the trainee should achieve a good level of knowledge
and understanding of the workings of the department and the activities
required to facilitate high quality production. They will be provided with

will be given an opportunity to use their initiative and put forward new

The Paint Unit is the heart of an automotive plant. We receive the car
body shell, which is then cleaned
, electrocoated, sealed, primed & painted
utilising the latest robotic and computer
-
controlled processes.


Key responsibilities


The Undergraduate will be a key member of the Process Engineering
Department with full ownership of their own engineering area,

encompassing our 19 sealing robots. Specific activities will include:




Continuous improvement of systems in terms of quality, cost and
throughput. This will involve planning, designing, developing &
implementing solutions from concept to implementation
.



All engineering aspects relating to the chosen role.



Utilising the latest problem solving techniques (including Red
-
X / 6
Sigma) to analyse quality / equipment / throughput issues. Training
in these techniques will be given if needed.



Error proofing



A
ny Upgrade and new facility projects in liaison with MED..



Analyse Paint Unit equipment performance.



Liaising with different outside suppliers.


The undergrad will gain a vast experience of paint process and
maintenance techniques. This will involve inter
acting with people at
many different levels, from managers to line workers.

The undergrad has a vital role within the Paint Unit which is both
varied and challenging.. With the launch of a new model Astra in 2009,
this role will test the undergraduate’s s
kills fully whilst giving a great
insight into the whole development and launch process of a new vehicle.
