Pronto Customer Support Application



Pronto’s UniFi OSS features an XML based API that allows for the development of custom
applications for various data access and alert related features. This paper provides a
description of a Network Monitoring Applica
tion, developed and offered by Pronto Networks,
that features complete network monitoring of the PSC/PSG and all the APs connected at the
location. As we illustrate, this application includes an integrated AP monitoring function. Note
that in the Pronto
UniFi OSS solution, the APs can be from various hardware manufacturers.


Architecture of the GAPI Application:


GAPI is a mechanism developed as a part of the Pronto UniFi OSS to deliver the critical
customer related information in any possible combinati
on to any external application. GAPI is
capable of


1. Recognizing an event.

2. Notify the external application of the event occurrence, and

3. Deliver information pertaining to this event to the external application.


GAPI is an easy to use mechanism tha
t delivers the notifications of all event types to any
external application and then accepts a query for delivering any data pertaining to that event,
subject to security restrictions. GAPI is a Java/Perl servlet with support for SOAP/XML data.
Figure 5 sh
ows the basic architecture of the GAPI application.

Pronto’s Customer Support Application is an XML based API application designed for the
purpose of monitoring a wireless hotspot network. The a
pplication provides a customizable
GUI based view of the network, in the form of various fields for different parameters
associated with the WISP, and the network elements to be monitored. The application allows
login access to the network personnel at the

following levels for monitoring purposes:

The application use
s the following GAPI calls to
authenticate

a NOC user, WISP user and a
location user respectively:

The application GUI allows the user to have a choice of screen views, which can be either of
the following:


1.

Fix
ed


The resolution and size of the application window will remain fixed to the
standard screen size.

2.

Match


The user according to his/her preference can adjust the resolution and size of
the application window. This allows the user to fit all the content
s of the screen in a
preferred window size.


The main screen that displays on user login has 2 main tabs


“Main” and “Up/Down”. As
the name suggests, the “Main” tab shows a full view of details monitored for controllers.
The “Up/Down” tab shows the detai
ls of controllers Up and Down State. The below figure
shows both tab views.

In the Up/Down Tab screen, you can select any Up/Down C
ontroller and view its history
Details. Following figure shows the history details for a selected Controller. Details like WISP
name to which the controller belongs, NAS Id, Location Name, Last heartbeat time etc can be
viewed here.

Using the export button in the Up/Down Controller tab, one can export the Up/Down Controller
data in “.csv” and other file formats

The application features the ability to monitor the PSCs and APs

in Pronto’s UniFi OSS. This is
accomplished by using XML
-
based APIs. Status of each PSC can be displayed using different
color codes. For example, if the PSC status is displayed as:


a.

Red


It indicates that the PSC is down.

b.

Green
-

It indicates that the P
SC is up.

c.

Orange
-

It indicates that the PSC is partially down, i.e. one or more of the APs
connected to the PSC may be down.

The application allows the NOC personnel to monitor any specific network element by
performing a search for that particular netwo
rk element. This search can be based on the
following parameters:


a.

All Exact Words


This allows to search for any specific network element/specific
parameter associated with a specific network element by keying in the exact string,
as it needs to be searc
hed.

b.

All Any Word
-

This allows to search for any specific network element/specific
parameter associated with a specific network element by keying in the any of the
words in the exact string, as it needs to be searched.

c.

Any particular field name


This wou
ld allow the network statistics to be displayed
according to a particular field value. For example, network statistics can be
displayed based on a particular WISP ID, Location ID, or NAS ID, etc.

ield Search Options


The application allows an automatic refresh of the data in various fields displayed on specified
configurable intervals.


The GUI based view of the application is fully customizable. It allows the various windows in
the application vie
w to be movable according to user’s choice. For example, two windows are
shown below that display 2 different views of the same monitoring data in the application
windows. The application also provides the ability to view specific WISP details like WISP
co
ntact details, Gateway details, details, with the ability to drill
-
down based on WISP, location,
PSC status, etc.

The application
presents the status of various connected Access points, which may be any
third party APs. A list of any connected APs can be viewed by clicking on the AP List tab.
Similarly, the status of ACLs, VLANs or L3 features can be viewed by clicking on their
respe
ctive tabs if there are any of these are configured in the network. The following figure
displays a list of connected APs.

The Network Monitoring application provides an integrated view of the entire network,
abstracting the hardware specific configuration details from the NOC operator,

reducing
operating expenditures.


On the top Panel of the main tab screen are provided three buttons for the following functions:




Position Reset


To reset the position of the controllers in the list to default.



Logout


Allows the user to logout of the
application.



Full Screen


Allows the user to have a full screen view.



The following screen shows the placement of these buttons on the screen.

The application allows the user to switch to other applicatio
ns and/or web pages via
integration through external APIs. On the right bottom of the main screen, the GUI provides
links to the following:




Login Page Link


On clicking this the user gets redirected to the login page that is
provided at that hotspot/hotz
one location.



Registration Page Link


For new users, this is used for redirection to the
registration page.



Salesforce Link
-

For the users having valid login credentials for the Salesforce
Application, this link will redirect to the Salesforce Applicatio
n.



OSS Link


Takes the user to the Pronto UniFi OSS application.



Telnet Link


Allows the user to configure/troubleshoot using Telnet.




























Pronto’s Customer Support Application includes an integrated AP monitoring function for any

WISP configured on the UniFi OSS. It uses various XML APIs for this purpose to leverage on
the extensibility of the APIs to easily modify the CSA Application based on the customer
requirements.
