Joomla Templates

Considering that we need increased flexibility with our site in terms of its use as a blog
format and a corporate site simultaneously, we should consider that the template on top
of which we design should provide out of the box features t
hat would greatly speed up
the design process. I’m going list a few templates that are up for consideration and create
quick breakdowns of their benefits and disadvantages.

Templates vs. Frameworks

Frameworks
(Recommended Path)

Frameworks allow the user
extra controls to help in customizing your template to fit the
brand. They provide many of the features that otherwise would take a ton of development
work to achieve whilst providing flexible so you can get the look you want.

Pros:

Out of the box web 2
.0+ features that are configurable

Flexible Griding/position system great for create different layouts quickly

Find most of the code to adjust in one place

Most template items have been tested for cross browser compatibility.

Cons:

Have to learn their meth
odology of editing and creating designs so that we can match closely with
mockups.

Site Templates

These templates are still made without a framework in mind. They often times require the
addition of plug
-
ins to support higher functionality as well as fr
ont
-
end slickness.

Pros:

Easy to learn because template changes are in few files.

Forces you to code in your new design features. You can get the layout exactly how you want it
(Given extra time.)

Cons:

Have to find plug
-
ins and extensions for features t
hat are missing in the template.

Layout flexibility is limited

New features = coding + testing of that code.

Templates and Frameworks to Consider

Gantry

Seems like a robust framework created by rockettheme. There is a heavy focus on maintaining the grid

-
magically using sliders. As a framework, it has plugins for both metaweblog and moveable type APIs.
This framework comes with a default template t
hat can be easily duplicated and designed in the way we

want. This means we shouldn’t have too much trouble linking the Skyword app to the blog; this can be an
issue with other frameworks.

An equally robust framework for Joomla! There doesn’t seem to be any information (good or bad) in terms
of issues with Metaweblog API. It also seems to not affect any of the data, but without specifi
c data related
to it, I can’t be sure.

A grid based template specifically for Joomla 1.7 that seems fairly configurable. Requires installation and
investigation. This may be a better solution for Skyword in opposition to installing a framework to maintain
the grid. It seems mostly CSS/st
yle driven. This is preferable and would make it easier to covert the design
to a responsive template for view on mobile devices.

Customize ‘Atomic’ Template to make it our own

Type:

Template

Atomic is a bare bones theme that we can clone to make our own

template. The key to this is that we will
be able to achieve our exact design (since we’ll be creating the complete CSS file); however, it requires us
to design every single piece in all of its forms. This is a lot of work to make sure each piece is suita
ble and
cross browser compatible, xhtml validated, etc.
