NATIONAL CENTRE FOR GENETIC
RESOURCES AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

B.

MISSION

Nigeria is endowed with diverse biological heritage, which need to be
conserved. NACGRAB is to ensure the conservation and sustainable
use of these bioresources through Research and Developme
nt.

WHAT IS NACGRAB?

The National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology
(NACGRAB) is a Parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science
and Technology (FMST). It was established in 1987 to act as the
Centre of focus, in the country, for research,

data gathering and
dissemination of technological information on matters relating to
genetic resources utilization, genetic resources research and
development. The Centre, backed up by Decree 33 of 1987 is
expected to regulate the seed, livestock and fish
eries industries
through its Varietal Release Committees. This is also complimented
by the Seed Decree 72 of 1992.

WHAT IS NACGRAB FOR?

The programmes of the Centre include:

Conservation, preservation and maintenance of valuable
plant genetic resources, f
or immediate utilization and
posterity;

Networking and co
-
ordinating activities in the development of
capacities in plant and animal genetic resources;

Servicing of the activities of the National Committee on
Naming, Registration and Release of Crops Varie
ties,
Livestock Breed and Fisheries;

Application of tissue culture for plant conservation and
overall agricultural development;

Development of animal genetic resource (poultry, goat,
snailry etc).

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS?

NACGRAB performs the following f
unctions in order to contribute to
the realization of government aspirations in national development.

Acquisition of germplasm, their conservation for immediate
utilization and posterity to rapidly transform our agriculture
and industry, improve the local
sourcing of drugs that are of
plant origin and help in the amelioration of harsh
environments.

Acquisition, maintenance, exchange and utilization of
microbial cultures.

Development of facilities, the identification of national
research needs and priorities

and the conduct of research in
conservation and utilization of genetic resources.

Co
-
ordination, mobilization and networking of research in the
area of bioresources development.

OUR RESEARCH MANDATE

To arrest rapid erosion and loss in the country’s cro
ps
genetic resources caused by cultivation, urbanization rural
development, grazing, desertification, pest outbreak, and
natural catastrophes etc.

To gather through exploration and collecting expeditions
carried out in the different ecological zones in the

country,
meaningful and rich stock of crop germplasm materials

To maintain/preserve (under short, medium and long term
genebank, field genebank, living collections etc) such
inestimable crop genetic resources materials for present and
future use.

To ensur
e the continued availability of genetic
resources/germplasm materials of important food crops,
medicinal plants, tree crops, fibre, forage and vegetable
plants among others.

To characterize/evaluate and multiply collected germplasm
materials with the aim o
f selecting high yielding and pest
resistant crop accessions for distribution for agricultural
research and development

To document appropriately the germplasm stocks held by
the centre, research institutes and relevant organizations.

HOW IT IS ADMINIST
ERED

The Director/CEO is at the helm of affirms of the Centre. He reports to
the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, the supervising
ministry.

NACGRAB carries out its mandate under three departments and a
unit. The three departments are further stru
ctured into various units.

Finance and Administration Department has administration, accounts
and audit units

Planning, Research and Statistics has animal genetic resources,
plant genetic resources and biotechnology/tissue culture units.

Information and P
ublic Affairs has variety release committee,
information management, international collaboration and
documentation and library services units

Legal unit

WHO IT COLLABORATES WITH

NACGRAB, in the pursuit of its objectives, collaborates with some
institutes,

both within and outside the country. These include:

International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI)

International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre
(CIMMYT), Mexico

Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of United Nation

SOME OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

The Centre has made remarkable progress in the
micropropagation of plantain, pineapple, passion fruits,
sweet potatoes and cassava. The Centre has embarked on
the commercialization of plantlets of these commodities.
Succ
ess has been recorded in culturing some endangered
tree species such as
Hura crepitans
.

Protocols have also been developed for micro propagation of
Sesame and Gum Arabic

NACGRAB has consistently maintained a credible
demonstration field of disease free cas
sava, plantain, sweet
potatoes, pineapple, passion fruits, among other

NACGRAB has successfully established on its field some of
the endangered/underutilized plant species such as
Pausinystalia johimbe

(Idagbon),
Occumbakha aumbreville

(Igi
-
nla),
Thaumato
coccus danielli

(Ewe
-
eran),
Irvingia
gabonensis

and
Irvingia wombulu

(Bush mango, Oro
-
abeje),
Treculia africana

(Afon),
Synsepalum dulcificum

(sweet
berry, Agbagun),
Dacroydes edulis

(Bush pear, Elemi),
Chrysophylum albidum

(African Star Apple, Agbalumo)
T
etracarpidium conophorum

(Walnut, Asala)

The Centre has also established an arboretum of five
seedlings each for fifteen different endangered and
underutilized multipurpose plant species. The plant species
are
Afzelia africana, Entandrophagma angolense, Ma
nsonia
altissima, Triplochiton scleroxylon, Khaya senegalensis,
Pinus curibaea, Terminalia ivorensis, Cedrela odorata,
Terminalia superba, Adansonia digitata, Shorea roxyburghii,
Hildergardia barteni, Sterculia setigera, Daniellia ogea and
Albizia lebbeck
.

NACGRAB has a total of 7,000 accessions of 216 crop
species (both economic and food crops) in the seed banks.

NACGRAB services the activities of the National Committee
on Registration and Release of Crop Varieties and Livestock
Breeds and this committee h
as officially registered and
released (both actively and retroactively) a total of three
hundred and seventy five (375) crop varieties and one
livestock breed.

NACGRAB has collected, prepared and documented well
over a thousand plant species at its newly e
stablished
Herbarium unit.
