Hypervisor
Virtualization on
Microsoft Windows 2008

Overview

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper
-

V server role is much anticipated and
dynamic virtualization platform software. It is a Type
-
2 Hypervisor so
its virtualization
software is running within the

Windows Server 2008
environment

rather than
running on
the hardware without an operating system. The virtual capsules in which
the operating

system and favored
software will be

contained
are

called virtual machines. Multiple virtual
machines can run concurrently on top of Hy
per

V with each having independent
functions.
Its portability, robustness, scalability and most importantly reduces potential
costs
that otherwise be spent
on developm
ental systems or added hardware
.

Pre
-
installation Requirements

In order to
begin
working

on the project you must first gather the necessary
resources in order to begin. You will need Windows Server 2008 on a writable DVD disc.
If you are a student at UNCC you m
ay get this for free at
the MSDNAA

site
http://msdn04.e
-
academy.com/elms/Storefront/Home.aspx?campus=uncc_cit

. In the lab
there sh
ould be blade servers available, pick one that is not being used and place the
Systems Management Tools and Documentation
CD in the CD drive. Read

Appendix A

for guidelines on formatting the blades server correctly

and installing Windows Server
2008.

What you will learn

In this
exercise you will learn how to setup a windows 2008 server in

a lab setting.
Once installed you will also be required to install and configure

the hypervisor feature with
designated VM’s
. These VM’s will have the Windows server 2008 operating system
installed on each

respectively
. Next, you will have the oppo
rtunity of installing IIS
7.0, a
web server for specifically
for Windows, and learning what to do to create a simple

3

website. In addition you will also learn how to implement FTP with
in the IIS environment
on a separate VM.

Summary

Windows Server 2008 is

now prepped and installed. You will now be able to
continue with the project. Make sure that you remember your username and password
because you will be using these credentials

to log into the Windows 2008 server.

Windows
Server 2008 other than the Apache

server is the most common web server in use. Its ease
of use
, GUI,

and plethora of
features give it a

advantage over Apache for new users
whose technical knowledge of the system is not considerate.

Installing Hyper
-
V

Restart the server and log in using
your new password. Now that you are logged in
successfully you will proceed to install Hyper
-
V:

Once you are logged in,
Click

Start and click to open Server Manager.

Locate the Roles Summary area of the main Server Manager window.

Click Add Roles

On the
specific Server Roles page click , Add Hyper
-
V

Follow the prompts to finish installing the Role and click OK when finished

Once installed you will need to access the virtualization Management Console to
configure virtual machines. You can find

the VMM with
in the Administrative Tools
menu in the Start menu.

Once
opened you

can use the Create Virtual Networks page to select the network
adapters that

you wish
to make

connections. You should leave network adapter
open for remote access.

Only Ethernet (802.3) ne
twork adapters are supported.

Click install on the Confirm Installation Selections page

4

Upon completion, click Close to end the installation

Once you have completed the installation

of hypervisor create and configure 2
VMs

Install Windows server 2008
on each

VM. This process should take about 30
-

40
minutes each

Summary

You have installed the hypervisor in the windows server 2008 environment.

This will enable a virtual environment in Windows Server 2008.
You have also
created two VM machines on each. These VM’s will respectively be
used for

a
specific server role. VM’s endless capabilities

will become a mainstay in the IT
industry.

We will now proceed to
the installation and creation of your first website
on
IIS 7.0

INSTALLING IIS 7.0
