COGNOS 8 INTERNET EXPLORER CHEAT SHEET

So there you are, sitting before the Executives, anxiously awaiting your opportunity to shine. You've spent weeks
developing dazzling reports and dashboards. The meeting begins. You open up your web browser and click on the
bookmark to start an IBM Cognos 8 session. You're waiting...waiting...and BAM...you're confronted with a screen
showing an HTTP 500 error.
You ask yourself, "Self, how this could have happened?"
The answer? More often than not, some browser/security setting has plagued your system.
Every day, more and more security threats surround us. Fortunately for us, our IT teams are there to help protect
us from malicious activity. However, sometimes this 'protection' comes at a price. The price being the exact
scenario above...our IBM Cognos presentation gone bad.

Well, after going through this cheat sheet, hopefully you will be armed with enough information to prevent this
scenario in the future.

The following settings are specific to Microsoft Internet Explorer. Other browsers may have similar settings.
1. Disable Pop-up blockers. This is probably the number one cause for unexpected behavior in an IBM
Cognos environment. Most people don't realize that there can be several different Pop-up blockers
running at any given time. Have you installed the latest version of your favorite app lately? Nowadays,
several applications default to installing one of those fancy toolbars into your browser, in hopes to make
things easier. The Yahoo!, Bing, Google, etc. toolbars all have their own Popup blockers. If all else fails,
holding down one of the Ctrl keys, while clicking any link, bypasses most Popup blockers. Alternatively,
you can add your IBM Cognos URLs to the Exception list within your Popup blocker(s).
2. Add IBM Cognos URLs to the Trusted Sites zone. Although not completely fool-proof, adding the
URLs of your IBM Cognos Servers to the Trusted Sites zone (in Internet Explorer) should protect you from
most issues. Keep in mind though, each zone within Internet Explorer has its own settings. i.e. Popup
blocker, Enabling downloads, etc..
o
In Internet Explorer, open the Tools/Internet Options window and select the Security tab.
o
Select the Trusted Sites zone and click on the Sites button.
o
In the "Add this website to the zone:" textbox, ensure the URL has the value of your IBM Cognos
server. Generally, the fully qualified name of the server should be adequate. i.e.
https://gateway.cu.edu
,
https://rpt-qa.cu.edu

3. Enable automatic prompting for file downloads. This setting is usually the one responsible for IBM
Cognos output to Excel not working.
o
In Internet Explorer, open the Tools/Internet Options window and select the Security tab.
o
Select the zone that you added your IBM Cognos URLs to. In #2 above, this should be Trusted
Sites.
o
Click on the Custom Level button.
o
Scroll to the Downloads section and ensure "Automatic prompting for file downloads" and "File
download" are enabled.
4. Add IBM Cognos to your firewall software's exception list. All firewall applications are handled
differently. Please follow your vendor's instructions for adding IBM Cognos to the exception list.
5. Disabling the "This screen contains secure and unsecure data..." dialog windows. This doesn't
necessarily cause IBM Cognos to not work, as much as it can become annoying.
o
In internet Explorer, open the Tools/Internet Options window and select the Security tab.
o
Select the zone that you added your IBM Cognos URLs to. In #2 above, this should be Trusted
Sites.
o
Click on the Custom Level button.
o
Scroll to the miscellaneous section and disable the "Display Mixed Content" setting.
Keep in mind that most settings aren't applied until you close ALL Internet Explorer windows and then re-open.
