The book
A Framework for Understanding Poverty

by Ruby K. Payne is very
informative about l areas of diversity.

In chapter 1, I learned that the definition
of poverty is the extent to which an individual does without resources. The
resources are as follows: financial, emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, support
systems, relationship/role models and knowledge
of hidden rules. I think it is
important for every student to have a balance including all of the resources. I
have learned through my observations that not all
students’

needs are fulfilled in
every area thus creating diversity.

In chapter two of this
book I learned that there are five factors in the registers of
language. The five factors are: frozen, formal, consultative, casual and intimate. The founder
of this theory states “that one register down in the same conversation, and that socially
acc
epted. However, to drop two registers or more in the same conversation is to socially
offensive.” (Payne, p 28) The second school on my observation log recognizes this fact. In
efforts to help students lacking, they have a special program in place. Eve
ry student that does
not have English as the first language in the home must attend a one hour class daily with a
language specialist. This is a program called ESL


English Second Language. I think this is a
great program. I am hopeful that English wil
l remain as the primary language in the states for

years to come. It is scary for me to think that another language such as Spanish would take
over in the states.

I really enjoy the surveys found on pages 38


40 in this book. The surveys helped me
evalu
ate where I am on my way of thinking. The surveys helped me realize things that I may
take for granted such as the luxury of having a car. I have had a car of my own since I was
sixteen years old. It is sad to think that some families really can move in

half of a day. It
would take me at least a week to pack and move. This was an eye opener for me as to what are
families are up against. I think it is important for me as an educator not to judge the students.
The students cannot help what they are dea
lt with. As an educator it is important for me to
keep the students in a safe, enjoyable learning environment at school.

In closing, I have learned a lot about diversity through this class. Looking back I think I
was sheltered to a lot of things that rea
lly happen in other families. I am an only child from a
modest home. My dad went to work faithfully every day to provide for my mother and
me
. My
mom is from Germany. My mom was a stay at home mom. I was adopted when I was three days
old. I know I a
m very fortunate to have the life I have had. I in turn feel that my children are
fortunate for the advantages that they

have. Thanks to this class, I realize that life is
different for everyone. As an educator, I must support every student to the best
of my ability.
I must be honest and fair. I plan to be the best teacher I can be!
