Description du projet


CARMA acronym stands for Cultural Augmented Reality Mobile
Application. It aims to develop a conte
xt
-
aware object
-
oriented
cultural tourism mobile application able to enhance the
information handled by users from their smartphones in an
apparent, efficient and useful manner. Such technological service
is to be built to work indoor, and will be able to
provide complete,
contextual and updated cultural information.

The starting point of the process would be an object (for example
an art work exhibited at a museum) the user is interested in, and
so he points it out with his phone’s camera. The information
to be
shown would be collected online, combining various technologies,
such as touristic/cultural ontologies and state
-
of
-
the
-
art intelligent
search engines and displayed in a multilingual, accessible, user
friendly interface using Augmented Reality techni
ques.

The constant extension and evolution of graphic, processing and
connectivity capacities of smartphones has opened a wide range of
applications increasingly attractive and handy for users. One of the
trends in this market is the introduction of Augme
nted Reality,
currently limited to outdoor scenarios where its application can
lean on GPS and compass positioning techniques which can
determine the place (building, monument, landscape) the user is
focusing in with his mobile device. The project seeks fo
r a
technological breakthrough at indoor scenarios through the
incorporation of object recognition.

CARMA intends to become a very useful tool for those looking for
extra cultural information while visiting places of their interest.

The main role of the partners, according its expertise and capacities, is

Description du projet


The project that will be titled GB
-
TRANSPAN (GlassBlock
-
TRANslucent PANels), DSC integrated, wants to deeply analyse the
problems related to the improvement of glassblocks

performance
and its integration with the DSC technology in order to use them
for the construction of translucent photovoltaic panels that can be
used to build sustainable building envelope even in Mediterranean
and Tropical Areas.

In 2020, the 38% of elec
tricity produced will be renewable,
according to the Road Map traced by EU. Among all the renewable
sources, photovoltaics will have the largest rate of annual growth
and it is expected to reach the 9% of the electricity produced by
all sources of renewabl
e energy. To reach those results, a lot of
investments have to be made in the research for the development
of new technologies and solutions, along with the improvement of
the traditional ones. The third generation of PV, particularly the
DSC (dye
-
sensitiz
ed solar cell)
-

based on the use of organic or
hybrid (organic/inorganic) cells


is one of the new frontiers,
especially for the potential of a complete sustainability in terms of
ecological and economical costs and for its particular affinity with
the t
heme of building integration photovoltaics (BIPV). Currently,
the DSC technology is probably the most appropriate for BIPV, in
fact it is a multifunctional technology that unifies the photovoltaic
module with the building envelope by providing it with seve
ral new
functions
-

such as weather protection, thermal insulation, noise
protection, shadowing
-

while producing, at the same time, a
portion or a total building electricity usage and increasing not only
the environmental, but also the functional and aest
hetical building
value. On the other hand glassblock is a high
-
performance type of
glass in the field of sustainable architectural cladding. the process
of deposition of the cells on the single glassblock for the
construction of modules, their best positio
n and the performance
of this new kind of glassblock, DSC integrated, will be analysed in
terms of transmittance, light transmission and aesthetical effects,
with the aim to develop different prototypes.

The main innovation of the project is to apply organ
ic solar cells on
the glassblocks to build multi

functional PV modules that are
suitable for the construction of translucent building envelopes with
a high level of energy efficiency (ligh trasmission or protection

accordance to the shape of the cells

Description du projet


It is proposed to carry out research in the field of monocular
computer vision navigation system development. This system uses
terrain contour matching method. True position is determined from
the condition of maxim
um similarity of the observed terrain profile
and digital elevation map. This system is similar to the Terrain
Contour Matching (TERCOM) navigation system. The difference is
that the TERCOM system uses terrain profile on the segment of
lane, but proposed s
ystem uses sparse samples of terrain profile on
the scanned strip under an aircraft. Digital elevation maps are
available for Earth, Mars and Moon. This monocular computer
vision navigation system will use the well
-
known technologies for
3D reconstruction
of observed terrain from monocular sequence of
images. Reconstructed in such a way 3D profile has a characteristic
feature


ambiguity of measured terrain profile scale. This
ambiguity can be eliminated by using information of flight altitude
or/and flight

velocity. Another way of ambiguity elimination
-

is
inclusion of scale to the estimated parameters as well as position
of aircraft. Such extension of the estimated parameter number
requires additional computer power. MEMS (Micro Electro
-
Mechanical Sensor)

gyroscopes used for increasing of robustness
and stability of the 3D reconstruction process. Gyroscopes measure
fast angular motion of aircraft and consequently, considerably
lighten correspondence establishing between the same points in
the sequence of t
errain images. Influence of weather condition,
time of day/night and atmosphere aerosols can be decreased by
usage of the infrared light band. Well
-
known FLIR technologies can
be used in this case (for instance


such technologies used in
airborne targetin
g and navigation pods). Such sensor is much
simpler than the horizon sensor in “Development of computer
vision navigation system” project. Possibilities of usage of on
-
board
FLIR as the sensor for this navigation system should be estimated in
each case. So
me worse result can be achieved by using of TV
cameras, which operate in the visible
-
light band (0.3
-
0.7
micrometer wavelength). Such sensor is much cheaper than FLIR
sensor.


Application areas of monocular computer vision navigation
systems:

1. Navigatio
n of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or manned
aircraft.

2. Navigation of spacecrafts in a neighborhood of Mars and Moon.

Monocular computer vision navigation system advantages:

1. Comparatively small weight, size and power consumption.

2. There is no
error accumulation, which is the characteristic of
the inertial navigation systems.

3. Passive mode of operation. So any electromagnetic emission is
absent. This system cannot be suppressed by any active or passive
electronic countermeasures. Prevalent GP
S navigation system is
very vulnerable to active countermeasures.

The project goal is to develop and demonstrate in full

scale a
master plan of a general applicable concept for a unified energy
network. The research focuses on system integration and grid
connection of

energy generation, on a new intelligent network and
control architectures with increased flexibility, through supply and
demand response and on integration of electric power system with
other energy systems. Penetration of renewable energy sources
and dis
tributed generation (DG) based on real
-

time signals ,
enabling resources to contribute actively to the system balancing
and enabling optimized operation and control of the grid. Research
focuses on automation, modernization and restructuring of existing
energy system and to ensure sustainability in urban environments.
The objectives are to enable predictions to optimise energy
production, transport, distribution and consumption using machine
learning techniques and intelligent control in monitoring and
pr
otecting the energy network. Another objective is the
coordinated operation of distributed energy systems and
interaction among a large number of components and distribution
systems. Both the architecture (infrastructure) of the systems and
the requirement
s of the operational tools to be adapted within the
system. The project will provide EU with valuable solutions for safe
operation of future energy grids through optimization and real time
demand response technologies and will provide mixed energy
concepts

in order to reduce energy costs and C02 emissions.
