Scientists find chink in cane toad armour

Xavier La Canna, AAP

June 2012

Scientists say they have found the best weapon yet to eradicate
cane toads from isolated areas

using the amph
ibians' own
toxin against them.

Rick Shine from the University of Sydney's school of biological
sciences said the system was already trapping tens of
thousands of cane toad tadpoles, and could see the toads
eradicated from some areas.

"I think it is real
ly exciting stuff," Professor Shine said on

"In order to control toads you need to stop them breeding, and this new method stops them from breeding,"
he said.

The technique relies on research that two years ago found that cane toad tadpoles we
re attracted to the
eggs of their own kind.

Professor Shine said the tadpoles probably sought out the eggs to kill off newly hatched tadpoles, which
would otherwise compete for food.

It was eventually realised that the way the tadpoles found the eggs was

via the toad's venom.

Once that breakthrough was made, scientists quickly realised they could use the venom as a bait, which
attracts cane toad tadpoles but repels native frogs.

Using funnels to trap cane toad tadpoles attracted to the bait, the scienti
sts captured tens of thousands of
young cane toads within a few days, and completely eradicated the toads from billabongs about 50 metres
in diameter.

And Now Europeans Are Dumping Euros For Bitcoin

Ben Duronio. And Financial Post 8

June 2012

With the huge debt crisis in Europe, locals are moving their
money out of banks in fear of lo
sing their savings.

Where are they putting their money?

Some are turning to Bitcoin, reports the Financial Post.

Bitcoin is a an internet
only currency released in 2009, created in
order to avoid fees for transferring money to different currencies
and c
redit card companies.

Because Bitcoin isn't under the control of central banks or

governments, there is a perception that it's not susceptible to political pressures. This is why so many are
flocking to bitcoin and leaving the European banks.

More from t
he Financial Post:

...The sudden rise (in Bitcoin transfers) has been driven by people in countries like Greece, Italy, Spain

and even the Netherlands

anxious to protect their savings.

“We’re getting requests from people literally saying, can we mail

you euros? We can’t do that legally, but
they keep asking.”

It's interesting that people are willing to put their money on Bitcoin, where security breaches by hackers
have already occurred, rather than in century old banks or government treasuries. This
says a lot about
how the people feel about the European banks.

The Chinese Kleptrocracy Is Like Nothing Ever Seen In Human History, And This Is How It

China is a kleptocracy
A government characterized by rampant greed and corruption
of a scale never
seen before in human histor
y. This post aims to explain how this wave of theft is financed, what makes it
sustainable and what will make it fail. There are several China experts I have chatted with

and many of
the ideas are not original. The synthesis however is mine. Some sources

do not want to be quoted.

The macroeconomic effects of the Chinese kleptocracy and the massive fixed
currency crisis in Europe are
the dominant macroeconomic drivers of the global economy. As I am trying a comprehensive explanation
for much of the world'
s economy in less that two thousand words I expect some kick

China is a kleptocracy. Get used to it.

I start this analysis with China being a kleptocracy

a country ruled by thieves. That is a bold assertion

but I am going to have to assert it.
People I know deep in the weeds (that is people who have to deal with
the PRC and the children of the PRC elite) accept it.

Israel to put thousands of Africans in detention camp

Yahoo News

Israel's interior minister said on Friday he hoped to soon start
moving tens of thousands of illegal African migrants

from Tel

planned "tent city."

An Israeli court cleared the way on Thursday for the

Interior Minister Eli Yishai told public radio 40,000 Sudanese
and Eritreans were next in his sights.

"There are still about 15,000 from north Sudan and some 35,000 from Eritrea," he said. "I am not allowed to
get them out at the moment."

said he expected legal obstacles would be removed and that the government was also offering a grant
to those prepared to leave voluntarily.

"They are close to being expelled either willingly or against their will," he said. "This is a number that

More Scientists Say Earth Is On The
Verge Of Collapse

generated pressures, at their current
pace, will likely drive our planet's ecosystems to
an irreversible collapse in the coming decades,
according to a new paper in the journal Natu

The paper, titled "Approaching a state
shift in
Earth's biosphere," is the work of 18 scientists
from Chile, Canada, Finland, the U.K., Spain and
the United States.

Based on a review of scientific theories,
ecosystem modeling and fossils, the rese
concluded that accelerating loss of biodiversity,
extreme climate fluctuations and a radically
changing total energy budget are precursors to
reaching a planetary tipping point that would be followed by an irreversible collapse of our planet's

The paper echoes the most recent scientific research on the adverse effects of overpopulation, over
consumption, biodiversity loss, energy scarcity and climate change on the environment.

The UN just published its Global Environmental Outlook, whi

because of over
logging, over
fishing, water scarcity and lack of action on climate change.

An April report by the Royal Society found that the combination of population growth in the least developed

World Wildlife Fund's Living Planet 2012 Report found that there was a 28 percent reduction in global
biodiversity between 1970 and 2008, and the wo

we consume in a single year. (WWF notes that by 2030 two earths won't even be enough to sustain human
consumption and that if everyone in the world lived like an average resident of the USA, a tot
al of four
Earths would be required to regenerate humanity’s annual demand on nature).

The Global Water Crisis Will Shake Humanity To Its Core [Charts]

Business Insider.
Gus Lubin
. June. 6th

You don't hear much about the
water crisis in the United States.
Water is still cheap here and our
borders contain a re
latively large
freshwater supply.

But in some places the crisis is in

1.6 billion people live in regions
with absolute water scarcity and by
2025 two
thirds of the world's
population could be living under
water stressed conditions.

Late energy
analyst Matthew Simmons warned this was scarier than peak oil: "As global population grows,
water usage has to rise for sanitation, food production and modern energy creation. It is unclear whether
this can happen."

The following slides contain alarming c
harts and maps. You can also check out guides from from Citi and
Jefferies on how to invest in water scarcity.

Israeli Nukes Are Deployed U
nderseas On Subs Bought From Germany

Der Spiegel

June 2012

For decades the world has accepted that Israel sits upon a
mountain of nuclear weapons that it says simply don't exist, and
without any proof to show otherwise, that's the way it has stood.

Until now.

Der Spiegel reports that after extensive research they've
unearthed proof not only of Israel's nuclear weapons, but that it's
deployed them aboard its fleet of new German
built submarines.

From Der Spiegel:

Germany is helping Israel to deve
lop its military nuclear
capabilities, SPIEGEL has learned. According to extensive research carried out by the magazine, Israel is
equipping submarines that were built in the northern German city of Kiel and largely paid for by the German
government with n
tipped cruise missiles. The missiles can be launched using a previously secret
hydraulic ejection system. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told SPIEGEL that Germans should be
"proud" that they have secured the existence of the state of Israel "fo
r many years."

In the past, the German government has always stuck to the position that it is unaware of nuclear weapons
being deployed on the vessels. Now, however, former high
ranking officials from the German Defense
Ministry, including former State S
ecretary Lothar Rühl and former chief of the planning staff Hans Rühle,
have told SPIEGEL that they had always assumed that Israel would deploy nuclear weapons on the
submarines. Rühl had even discussed the issue with the military in Tel Aviv.

The German
magazine says that documents from the German Foreign Ministry show the German
government has known about Israel's nuclear program since 1961, and has evidence of conversations on
the subject as recently as 1977.

The Most Sophisticated Attack Submarine In US History Is Now In Service

Mili Robert Johnson 3

June 2012

The U.S. Navy welcomed the most recent addition to its
fleet of Virginia Class submarines in a commissioning
ceremony yesterday at Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The Virginia Class boats have a list of technological
ovations unique to their design.

The Mississippi actually came in a year early and under
budget at $2 billion.

To support Special Operations Command operations, the Virginia class submarines are capable of
transporting and launching both the DDS (dry dec
k shelter) and the SDV (SEAL delivery vehicle). These
submarines are also equipped with a 9
man diver lock out chamber for rapid deployment of swimmers
directly from the submarine. The Virginia class submarines are the first class of American submarine to

equipped with a non
hull penetrating fiber
optic periscope system.

The Virginia is equipped with two Kollmorgen BVS
1 photonic masts. In addition to the standard daylight
optic capabilities of traditional periscopes, the photonic masts will also inc
orporate LLTV (Low Light TV),
thermal imaging, and laser rangefinding capabilities. To reduce the submarine's noise signature, the
various compartments are fitted with isolated deck modules, where components are mounted as a single
unit on a spring isolate
d platform, thus eliminating vibration related noise from radiating out through the hull
or axially between compartments.
