International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS2013)
September 2-5, 2013, Kyoto, Japan

The 12
th
International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS2013) was held
at Kyoto Terrsa in the ancient capital city of Japan: Kyoto. 388 participants from
28 countries/regions attended this triennial official event of WASER (World
Association for Sedimentation and Erosion Research). The symposium was
organized by Local Organizing Committee of the 12
th
International Symposium
on River Sedimentation (Chairperson: Prof. Dr. Shoji Fukuoka, Chuo University,
Japan), and IAHR was an official co-sponsor of this event. The main theme of
the symposium was Integrated Sediment Management for River Basin
Sustainability: Challenges & Prospects towards Mid-21st Century.
ISRS2013 received 448 abstracts from 36 countries/regions, of which 435
were asked to submit their full papers after the first-round of peer review by 50
members of the Review Board. The full papers submitted to the symposium
were then peer reviewed for the second round by 185 experts from all over the
world. Based on the review results and the revisions of authors, the symposium
finally selected 274 papers for oral and poster presentations and to be included
in the symposium proceedings: Advances in River Sediment Research (S.
Fukuoka, H. Nakagawa, T. Sumi and H. Zhang eds.) published by CRC Press /
Balkema (Taylor & Francis Group).
Two keynote lectures, three invited presentations, a special plenary session
WISA (Workshop on International Sediment Advancements), 200 oral
presentations in 5 parallel sessions and 71 poster presentations were arranged
in the symposium. The keynote lectures were A reverse flow system for the
sediment flushing from large reservoirs by Dr. Tamotsu Takahashi (Professor
Emeritus of Kyoto University, Japan), and Mechanism and prediction of bank
failure by Dr. Li Yitian (Professor of Wuhan University, China). Three invited
lectures were Sediment source: a key parameter of catchment sediment yield by
Dr. Desmond Eric Walling (Professor of University of Exeter, UK), Integrated
sediment management along a river - lessons in the Yahagi River, Central Japan
by Dr. Tetsuro Tsujimoto (Professor of Nagoya University, Japan), and River
sedimentation research by integrated modeling by Dr. Mustafa S. Altinakar

(Professor of University of Mississippi, USA). The special plenary session WISA
was an inter-organizational workshop organized under the auspices of
UNESCO-IHP-ISI and was devoted to disseminate beyond the limits of each
membership the most significant progresses attained by several scientific
associations operating in the field of sediment research and management.
These associations include WASER, IAHR, IAHS (International Association of
Hydrological Sciences), ISI (International Sediment Initiative) and ICOLD
(International Commission on Large Dams). Representatives of those
organizations and Japanese sediment research community: Prof. Giampaolo Di
Silvio (representative of WASER, Universita di Padova, Italy), Prof. Rollin H.
Hotchkiss (representative of IAHR, Brigham Young University, USA), Prof. Mike
Stone (representative of IAHS, University of Waterloo, Canada), Prof. Manfred
Spreafico (representative of ISI, University of Berne, Switzerland), Prof. Gerrit
Basson (representative of ICOLD, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa) and
Prof. Hajime Nakagawa (representative of LOC, Kyoto University, Japan), made
short summaries on the activities and advancements in sediment research
conducted in their representing organizations. Reports on the international
cooperation on sediment research and panel discussions focusing on impact of
dams and sediment management were also made during the workshop. The
regular oral and poster sessions covered a wide spectrum of river sediment
related issues such as sediment yield, sediment transport and morphology in
rivers and lakes, local scour and erosion, reservoir sedimentation and
management, sediment in estuarine and coastal area, environmental and
ecological aspects of sediment, modeling and measurement techniques,
sediment related disasters and integrated sediment management.
Technical tours were arranged on Sept.4 for visiting Ujigawa Open Laboratory
of Kyoto University, Amagase Dam, Aqua Biwa, Seta River Weir and Ishiyama
Temple. The tours were ended with the Lake Biwa Cruise.
ISRS2013 launched Best Paper Award and Excellent Paper Awards, for the
first time, to award authors with superior quality paper submission to the
symposium. The Best Paper Award was granted to Study of flood flow and
gravel riverbed variation analysis in the Satsunai River by K. Osada and S.
Fukuoka. Five Excellent Paper Awards were granted to Numerical experiments
on characteristics of braided streams observed in Satsunai River by S.
Yamaguchi, T. Inoue, Y. Shimizu and E. Suzuki, Local scour and sediment
sorting around an impermeable spur-dike with different orientations by H.
Mizutani, H. Nakagawa, K. Kawaike, H. Zhang and Q. Lejeun, An explicit
finite-volume depth-averaged 2-D model of morphodynamic processes near
mass edges and vegetation patches by W. Wu, Case study: movable-bed model
scaling for bed load sediment supply in the Old Rhine (France) by K. El kadi
Abderrezzak, F. Lebert, M. Chavatte, D. Aelbrecht and A. Clutier, and Numerical
simulation of landslide dam deformation caused by erosion by N. Harada, F.
Akazawa, S. Hayami and Y. Satofuka. The awarded papers were recommended
to be submitted to the International Journal of Sediment Research, the official
journal of WAWER, for possible publication.
The 13
th
International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS2016) will be
organized by the University of Stuttgart, Germany and is sketched on 19-22
September, 2016. The chairperson is Prof. Dr. Silke Wieprecht and the Liaison
