The purpose of this document is to summari
s
e the potential of the Andalusian entities
within the call of proposals of the Seventh Framework Programme in HEALTH 2012
(FP
7
-
HEALTH
-
2012).

Health research is a major priority for the European Union, with the aim of improving
the health of European citizens, to address global health issues and to boost the
competitiveness of European health
-
related industries.
Economically,
health
expenditure
in Spain

account
ed

for
almost 10% of the
GDP
,
according to the World
Health Organization.
Furthermore,
Andalusia is one of the regions with the largest
economic contribution to R&D in the biotechnology sector and also one of the mos
t
funded regions in this

field. It is also the second Spanish region in number of biotech
companies
1
.

The motivation of this document for CITAndalucía has been to turn the interests and
needs in research and development of Andalusian entities involved in this field into
opportunities for short
-
term collaboration in FP
7

projects.

The document gathers the Expressions of Interests (EoI) of several Andalusian entities
in different topics funded under the call for proposals FP
7
-
HEALTH
-
2012 and includes
the description of each
entity and the expertise they offer within the specific topic.
These EoIs are listed according to the reference of each topic.

topic)

NEOCODEX offers its unique expertise on human genomics and state
-
of
-
the
-
art technological platforms to support research and development for this
topic.

NEOCODEX

owns the
largest DNA
bank in Spain
, with over 20.000 samples
from a wide range of pharmaceutically relevant diseases, some of which
affecting the elderly (Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Osteoporosis,
Diabetes (Type 2), etc.). In addition to biobanking, our company o
ffers more
than 400 m
2

of laboratory fully equipped with
outstanding DNA reading
technologies

(Roche Light Cycler 480, Biotage PSQ96 Pyrosequencer,
Beckman SNPstream, Veracode, Affymetrix) complemented with an
exceptionally
strong bioinformatics platform
.

NEOCODEX’s unique expertise is on developing complex
whole genome
association studies (WGAS)

for the discovery and validation of
genomic
biomarkers

associated with susceptibility to complex diseases. NEOCODEX
partners can benefit from a relevant amount b
iomarkers data, generated by
our company, potentially associated with age
-
related diseases.

Additionally NEOCODEX offers technological know
-
how and experience on
clinical validation of biomarkers
, beginning with the selection and validation
of genetic m
arkers, using banked or prospectively collected new samples,
and subsequently establishing proper results interpretations to support
research towards successfully achieving this topic’s objectives. As an
additional value for biomarker validation, NEOCODEX
offers exclusive access
to a highly valuable unique tool for genomic data analysis, called
Hypothesis
-
Free Clinical Cloning (HFCC)
. HFCC analysis tool performs
multi
-
locus analysis
of the whole human genome
, searching for the combined effect of several
pol
ymorphic variations associated with susceptibility to complex diseases.
This powerful engine uses a new statistical method that can exploit the
information from relatively few patients and markers, providing much
greater power to sample
-
limited genomic stu
dies, enabling rapid, less
expensive marker identification and validation.

With over 10 years experience in developing innovative ideas for
personalized medicine, our team of highly
-
skilled professionals is trained to
work according to the highest qualit
y standards, providing our partners with
an ideal expertise for their
research needs on this specific topic.
