Degree Programme in Chemical, Molecular and Cellular

The Chemical, Molecular and Cellular Sciences Programme offers interdisciplinary curricula
designed to give you a solid foundation in modern Molecular Sciences and Cell Biology.

There are a num
ber of specific curricula from which students can choose:




Genetics and Development

Human Bioscience



This degree Programme also incorporates training in a number of professional skills,
cluding computer literacy, numeracy, problem
solving, communication and self
skills which will equip you to meet the demands of the workplace in the 21st century.

Who would be interested in this Programme?

This Programme has been designed to attra
ct a combination of students who have an
interest and aptitude in the central science of Chemistry and its many applications, and
students with an appreciation of and an interest in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry.

What courses will you take?

First Y
ear Courses

Students in this Programme will take the following group of courses during their first year:

A full course in Biology (optional for curricula in the chemical sciences)

A full course in Chemistry

Either a full course in Mathematics, or a half
course in Mathematics plus a half
course in either Applied Mathematics or Statistics

A full course in Physics for curricula in the Chemical Sciences

And, where appropriate, one other course in the sciences (e.g. Computer Science or
Geology) or in other d
isciplines to make up a total of four full courses

During the first year students are encouraged to take subjects that are common to all
curricula. This will give students a chance to determine their areas of interest before
choosing the curriculum in whi
ch to continue their studies. It is also possible to take senior
courses from other Programmes in the Sciences Faculty, and even from other Faculties.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

Graduates with good degrees in Chemical, Biochemical or Molecular and
Cellular sciences
are essential in just about every manufacturing, extractive, agricultural and energy industry.
Major employers include the large oil companies, SASOL, AECI, Sentrachem, and all
industries dealing with pharmaceuticals, agricultural product
s, foods, biotechnology
products, paints, plastics and polymers, cleaning agents, cosmetics, and textiles. Exercise
scientists advise sport players in sports clinics while dieteticians and physiologists work in
hospitals or private practice, clinics and fo
od companies.
