WEB THESIS REPORT
MA WEB DESIGN AND CONTENT PLANNING
LUCIA MASTRIA
9TH OCTOBER 2013
PROBLEM
Tuscany has been made famous thanks to its beautiful landscapes, its
works of art, good food and wine.
Too often, however, there is a stereotypical image of it. There is another
aspect of Tuscany, not well known even by local people: the small reali-
ties most authentic in the area, who are often at risk because they have
no opportunity to be heard.
This is the aspect that I would like to help spread: very often people buy
goods in large distribution chains ignoring that they can ￿ nd the same
product in the surrounding areas maybe with superior quality at the
same price. If each asserted local activities there would be a greater en-
vironmental protection and a great help to the local economy. It would
save money also in the transportation of goods from far away.
THE AIMS OF THE RESEARCH REPORT
Km0 Shop is an italian website which provides local food to local people.
(Just to clarify the name: if you had to make a translation for the English,
it could be 0miles-shop).
The website aims to create a community-oriented food system in whi-
ch people and farmers in the same geographic region are connected,
and everyone has access to fresh-from-harvest food. It encourage active
collaboration between farmers and consumers, facilitating dialogue and
stimulating curiosity, aggregation and mutual cooperation and bypas-
sing the mass distribution.
km0-shop.it is founded on the belief that locally grown, organic food
is healthier and more sustainable for the community and the environ-
ment. The website will begin by marrying the strengt hs of technology
and farming to help farms simplify and streamline their direct to consu-
mer deliveries.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE IDEA
OF THESIS
I built the site km0-shop.it as a working prototype to implement.
The site relies on local suppliers as the initial project:
• You can have delivered to your home or your offi ce a ready-made box
of fruit and vegetables or choose from the products on the website.
• The user can know the company where buys products.
Only those that are really craftspeople and ensure the quality of the pro-
ducts are part of the circuit.
• The fi nal bill will be released directly by the farmer that will add the
markup percentage of the site.
• Km0 Shop has an agreement with a local courier who will take care of
the deliveries.
My ￿ rst step was to buy a domain (hostingsolution.it) which cost around
10€ and a special hosting suitable for Magento (spaziorc.it) at the price
of 66€.
At the same time I selected 5 providers in my area that corresponded to
the characteristics of my project, which in turn have selected the pro-
ducts to be distributed.
At that point I installed Magento and started the construction of the
structure of e-commerce and customizing the theme.
Magento is a very powerful tool and largely customizable, I was curious
to try to understand its potential.
It is one of the most complete and performing e-commerce platforms.
Based on Zend Framework, Magento allows clear separation between
the core system and the look and feel of the website. This CMS also has
diff erent systems caching and indexing, and using a well confi gured ser-
ver, allows to obtain high performance while being a great platform.
Magento is released in the Open Source Community Edition
by OSL 3.0 license (Open Software License)

Other important aspects of this platform are the high indexing and ca-
ching, the ability to import dozens of languages and currencies in an
instant, the preparation for the search engines and customized settings
SEO, a rich display structure but at the same time simple and well orga-
nized.
Particular attention deserves the part of Magento Connect combines
many additional modules and themes to extend even more
the limits of the platform.
ANALYSIS OF THE SITE FROM MAY TO
SEPTEMBER
This is just a prototipe, as I said, this is why I choosed to avoid socials fot
the moment. It isn’t working now, because I need to ￿ nd a lender to get
the initial capital and start the ecommerce.
In May and June I started to identify and contact a few possible produ-
cers to have an idea about the products and the content to insert in the
website.
I selected a few manufacturers just to test the site.
Since July I have started using Magento and customizing the site, to bu-
ild the structure of my e-commerce.
During next months I’m going to write a business plan to get a support
from the banks
After the launch of the website I’m going to improve the analitycs and
the SEO (although Magento already provides a good indexing system by
default with the use of modules)
The work consists in the analysis, the optimization and measuring the
results of the websites following the pattern of Maile Ohye of Google.
The stages of analysis and constant monitoring of a site are as follows:
1 - Email Forwarding
2 - Search Queries
3 - Optimization of search results
4 - Keywords
5 - Removing duplicates

6 - Fix Errors crawling

9 - Server log
Some interesting tools to use with regard to SEO are:
Google Webmaster Tools
Google Insights for Search
Google AdWords Keyword Tool
Google Alerts
Google Trends
Google Website Optimizer
DoubleClick Ad Planner
Google Page Speed
Merchant Center
Google Site Map
