Decision Matrix / Project Proposal


Ideas:

Moisture Controlled Automated Sprinkler System

The sprinkler system will use a moisture detection system, using either a IC or DIY
solution, implanted into the

soil near the sprinkler head. The moisture sensor will output a logic
high when the moisture level is too low and a logic low when the soil moisture is sufficient. This
input will feed into the micro
-
controller housed in a base station located somewhere

easily
accessible near a wall outlet. When the micro
-
controller takes in a logic high output from the
moisture sensor, it will output a logic high to a relay and open the water valve, allowing the
sprinkler to turn on. When the micro
-
controller takes in

a logic low output from the moisture
sensor, it will output a logic low to the relay and close the water valve, shutting off the water
system. The micro
-
controller will have multiple inputs and outputs allowing multiple moisture
sensors and relays to be
attached so that it can cover a larger area with a single base station.
The system will be powered with an AC wall adapter to provide power to the base station,
relays, and moisture sensors.


Hand Held Binary Calculator

The binary calculator will function
ally resemble a hand
-
held arithmetic calculator. This
calculator will take only binary numbers and arithmetic operations as inputs from a simple key
pad. The outputs from this device will be visible in both binary and decimal form on a series of
numerical
LED displays. This calculator can perform binary to decimal conversion, binary
addition, binary subtraction, binary multiplication, and binary division. The results of all
arithmetic operations will be displayed in both binary and decimal form with limited

precision. If
time allows more functions may be incorporated in this design. A simple microproccessor will
manage the inputs/outputs and perform all relevant calculations. Since this is a hand
-
held
device power will be provided through a battery system.


Line Following Robot

This project will be based on a Braitenberg vehicle. The simple robot will detect a black
line on the floor and follow the line. The main components used to realize this design consist of
an 8bit micro
-
controller, photocells for sensin
g (2 or more), and two electric motors.


Proximity Sensor Cat Food & Water Fountain

The proximity sensor cat food and water fountain will make taking care of your feline
friends a breeze. There will be a bowl and container for food as well as a bowl with a

small tank
that hooks up to your sink for water, each with its own proximity sensor. As the cat walks up
each sensor will first check to see if there is anything in the bowls, if there isn’t then a small
amount of food and/or water will be released into t
he bowls. Your furry little friend will always
have fresh food and water. A micro
-
controller will communicate with the sensors and respond
accordingly. This will be powered through the AC wall outlet and it will also have a battery
backup.

For our decision
matrix, we used a rating system of 1
-
5, with 1 being the least favorable
and 5 being the most favorable. The decision matrix was completed by having each individual
members enter their own scores for each project with the criteria listed above. Each memb
er
also entered what they felt were the appropriate weights for each criteria with 1 being the least
important and 5 being the most important. The scores were then collected and averaged out to
determine the final ratings for each project.

Final Proposal:

Line Following Robot

Using the photocells connected to the analog pins, the micro
-
controller will calculate the
difference be
tween the evenly spaced photocells and power up the motor based on the
percentage of the line seen on the photocell. Turning the simple robot is accomplished by
adjusting the ratio of power delivered to the left and right wheels. Multiple LEDs may be used
to
help illuminate the line if they become necessary. Construction of the vehicle will consist of
using a preexisting car and reworking it to introduce our custom PCB, sensors, and any other
rework needed to obtain a functioning design. Special care will b
e taken to separate power and
ground between the micro
-
controller and the DC motors to remove the possibility of introducing
noise created in the motors into the sensitive electronics of the controller.
