EXHIBITION
Held concurrently with the Chemtech World Expo,
the Pharma and Biotech World Expo brings together
Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and its allied
sectors. The Pharma and Biotech World Expo was
first held in 1995.
CONFERENCE
The Pharma and Biotech Conference is a forum for
professionals and policy makers to converge and
discuss various issues and policies pertaining to the
industry and to share the latest technological
developments.
On a High Growth Trajectory
The Indian Pharmaceutical industry is now the 3rd largest in the
world in terms of volume (accounting for around 10 percent of
world's production) and 14th largest in terms of value
(accounting for around 2 per cent). Indian pharmaceutical retail
market showed a robust 15 per cent growth during 2011, mainly
driven by therapies like anti-diabetic, vitamin, anti-infectives
and dermatology. The Indian pharmaceutical market is expected
to touch USD 74 billion sales by 2020 from USD 11 billion now,
according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report.

India is emerging as a hub of Contract research and
manufacturing services (CRAMS), with the clinical research
organisations (CRO) market size around USD 0.3 billion, and is
expected to touch USD 1 billion by 2014. This is reflected in the
Indian biotechnology market, which is expected to grow at a
CAGR of 30 per cent, and the Indian CRO market, which is
expected to see growth of 49 per cent annually.

Leaders Speak.....
“To become a true global player, the industry needs
to become cost competitive and leader in technology
with distinct process development capabilities and
develop market and customer service competencies
that go beyond mere production and distribution of
products to become solution and service providers.”
Mr Bijoy Chatterjee
Secretary, Dept of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of
Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.
“With regards to clinical trials, the cost factor in India
is almost one-tenth of the cost overseas. It is possible
to do clinical trials in the country which starts from
molecule to market for about USD100 unlike
USD1000 elsewhere.”
Dr. Anji Reddy,
Chairman, Conference Advisory Board,
Pharma + Biotech World Expo 2005 and Chairman,
Dr. Reddy's Laboratories.
“The Indian Pharma Industry is making waves in
exports of generics or APIs, contract manufacturing
and R & D. Now the challenge has shifted from using
IP to creating IP. We need to expand our R & D
investment substantially to secure our rightful place
in the global arena.
Mr. Ajay Piramal
Chairman, National Advisory Board, Pharma + Biotech World
Expo 2007 and Chairman, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd.
“US may be the “land of opportunity”, India is the
“land of ideas”. And while the past has seen Indian
ideas and minds migrating to the US, today there is a
“reverse brain drain” as more Indians return to India.
That is why, India offers the highest intellectual
capital per dollar, a term coined by Jack Welch, the
legendary CEO of General Electric.”
Dr. R. A. Mashelkar
Chairman, National Advisory Board – Innovation, Pharma +
Biotech World Expo 2007 and Director General,
Council of Scientific & Industry Research.
“The global meltdown and the drive to cut cost by
companies will mean more opportunity for CRAMS. IP
plays an important role in CRAMS off shoring
decisions by global companies. It is in India's interest
that one must seek this global opportunity in
pharmaceuticals, emerging as a choice destination for
world's leading companies to conduct research and
manufacture in India, for the world at large.”
Mr. Ranga Iyer
Managing Director, Wyeth Ltd.
