Preliminary Meeting on EUMODIC Bioinformatics Software Development

Harwell, June 20th 2006

The aim of the meeting is to come to an agreement on the requirements for the phenotype data
capture for EUMODIC and the approach we should take to develop it. T
his involves answering
two questions: “What should it do?” and “How should the development process proceed?”. An
important consideration will be how any new application should interact with data collection
systems at the major data
-
generating centres (Harw
ell, Hinxton, Munich, Strasbourg). We will
therefore start the day with presentations from each of the centres of the current state
-
of
-
the
-
art
there, followed by a presentation on our ideas on how data collection could work, based on work
carried out durin
g EUMORPHIA.

What should the software

do? Here we need to get a fairly detailed idea of what
the requirements are likely to be.

What technologies should we use (web? JAVA app? other options? Should there
be a single central database or subsidiary ones? De n
ovo development or based on
something extant?). Can existing software such as Mouse Trap be adapted to our
requirements?
