Investigator Awards Competition

(Moore Foundation's

Marine Microbiology Initiative)

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

has announced a new research competition
designed to provide vital support to some of the world's most innovative scientists in marine
microbial ecology and related fields.

The foundation's Marine Microbiology Initiative has supported research in marin
e microbial
ecology since 2004, stimulating ideas and discoveries that are enabling a comprehensive
understanding of marine microbial communities, including their genetic diversity, composition,
and function; their ecological role in the oceans; and their
contribution to ocean health and

The new MMI Investigator awards program will run from 2013
18 and is designed to support the
research of an influential group of individual researchers who will be selected based on the
significance of thei
r past research, the quality of their current research, the potential for
continued groundbreaking science in the future, and the probability that their future work will
contribute to the success of the Marine Microbiology Initiative.

The program will s
elect ten to fifteen current and emerging leaders from around the world, at
varying stages of their careers, who represent a variety of scientific backgrounds

microbial ecology to biogeochemistry, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, and beyond.

To be eligible for the competition, applicants must hold a tenured or tenure
track position (or
equivalent) for a minimum of four years on the date of application, with the first appointment as
an independent researcher no later than June 1, 2008; and hav
e served as principal investigator
on one or more active, major, peer
reviewed research grants.

The foundation anticipates that the awards will range from approximately $200,000 to $500,000
