ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE DIVINCENZO ANNOUNCES THE RECONSTRUCTION

OF DODD STREET BRIDGE IN EAST ORANGE IS COMPLETE

East Orange, NJ

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced on
Wednesday, November 13
th

that a project to replace the superstructure of the Dodd Street
Bridge in East Orange is completed. The project is part of an ongoing initiative by
DiV
incenzo’s administration to modernize infrastructure to promote safety and continue to
meet the needs of the community.

“The public relies on county roads and bridges to travel to work, go to school and move about
during their daily lives. Ensuring that o
ur infrastructure is safe and modern is essential to our
quality of life. This bridge is important because Dodd Street is a major thoroughfare that
crosses next to Essex County Watsessing Park, leads to the Garden State Parkway and
passes by the Whitney Ho
uston Elementary School,” DiVincenzo said. “We appreciate the
community’s patience in dealing with the inconvenience during construction, and we thank our
contractors for limiting the disruption and completing the upgrades in less than two months,”
he note
d.

“I’d like to thank the County Executive for making this great improvement. The public is happy
when they see government in action making sure our infrastructure is up to date,” said
Freeholder Carol Clark, whose district includes East Orange.

“This i
s a wonderful project and is an example of what the County is doing under the
leadership of Joe DiVincenzo to enhance the quality of life here in Essex,” Freeholder Vice
President Patricia Sebold said.

The original Dodd Street Bridge was built in 1975 an
d was found to be “structurally deficient”
based on recent inspections. The superstructure and deck were removed and Dodd Street
was closed to vehicular traffic during the construction period. A temporary pedestrian bridge
was installed to enable access th
rough the area.

The new superstructure is made of reinforced, pre
-
stressed concrete slab beams and a
reinforced concrete deck, and meets all current design standards. The bridge is 27 feet long
and 49.8 feet wide with a single lane of traffic traveling in

both directions and sidewalks on
both sides of the road. Construction was completed in just seven weeks.

TY Lin International from Hackettstown, NJ, was awarded a professional contract for
$249,905 to design two new bridges on Dodd Street in East Orange
and Clark Street in
Glen Ridge and provide inspection services during construction. Construction on the Clark
Street Bridge is underway. Colonelli Brother, Inc. from Hackensack was awarded a publicly
bid contract for $388,000 to perform the construction wo
rk at the Dodd Street Bridge. The
Essex County Department of Public Works monitored the project and answered questions
to ensure delays were avoided. The upgrade was funded with a grant from the New Jersey
Department of Transportation’s Local Bridge Future

Needs Grant.
