If we discover the cure for cancer but
only half the people have access to it,
did we discover the cure for cancer or
half of the cure?

Telementoringand Telerobotics
 Speed at which new surgical procedures can be
adopted is limited by competent surgical mentors
 Telestration has been developed to draw on surgeons
video field
 Project with Intuitive Surgical to develop 3-D
observation, telementoring with telestration
 Next step is to develop disabling control “driver
training” type control
 Eventually to perfect distance telerobotic surgery

Robotics and other collaborations
 CM robot now on campus to be used for research by Engineering
and Vet Med
 Opportunities to test distance surgery using new fiber link from
UCDMC to Campus
 Develop virtual simulations, (practice surgery before actual case)
 Opportunity to look at satellite communications for robotics
 Working with Sanjay Joshi on hospital based mobile robot in our
GCRC
 Many other opportunities to work on other telemedicine issues

Conclusion
 Telemedicine is simply real-time delivery of
information from the expert to the point of need
 Telemedicine’s reach and it’s capabilities must
improve to make it more useful
 Significant engineering opportunities exist in this
area
 A number of collaboration have begun between
Engineering and Medicine
 Future changes in health care technology and
patient demands will likely expand the role of
telemedicine
