CITATION

on

the occasion of the admission of

KYE JOON LEE, BSc Seoul Nat., PhD UNSW

to the degree of

DOCTOR OF SCIENCE

Friday 13 May
2005

Kye Joon Lee holds a Bachelor of Science from Seoul National University and
a Doctor
of Philosophy in biotechnology from the University of New South Wales. Since
completing his studies at UNSW, Professor Lee has had a distinguished research career
at Seoul National University in microbiology and microbial biotechnology. He is a
re
cognized authority in various areas of biotechnology and
commands international
respect for his work.
He has published over 120 scientific articles in some of the world

s
most prestigious journals.

The work of Kye Joon Lee has led to the understanding of
certain physiological and
kinetic parameters in the optimization of fuel ethanol production using the bacterium
Zymomonas mobilis. He has
demonstrated

in this work that a detailed understanding of
cellular physiology must be closely combined with quantitat
ive bioengineering analysis.

Professor Lee has also made important contributions in the field of antibiotic production.
This work has been described by Professor Arnold Demain, a member of the National
Academies of
Science

of the United States of America
, Mexico and Hungary, as highly
significant. As well as fundamental contributions to science, much of Professor L
e
e

s
research is of major commercial significance.

In the review of his contributions to biotechnology and microbiology, Sir David
Hopwood has

commented that Professor L
e
e

s
studies

represent significant advances in
still poorly understood, but highly important, fields. The nature of his work and its
outcomes are now a major international resource in biotechnology.

Kye Joon Lee has served his
country as an advisor to the Government, and held senior
positions at Seoul National University, the Korean Federation of Science and
Technology
Societies

and the Korean Society of Microbiology and Biotechnology. He
has been editor
-
in
-
chief of the eminent
Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology
. He
has also been
involved

in the
organization

of a number of major international
conferences, including chairing the Organising Committee for the 9
th

International
Symposium on the Genetics of Industrial Microorga
nisms, which was rated as one of
the best conference ever held in this field.

Kye Joon L
e
e has been an outstanding alumnus and major ambassador for UNSW in
Korea and has been instrumental in generating a number of collaborative research
projects between
UNSW and Seoul National University in the area of biotechnology.

The examiners who reviewed his work were unanimous in recommending that Kye
Joon Lee be awarded the degree of Doctor of Science and the Academic Board of the
University has resolved accordin
gly.
