Introduction:
-

Libraries have been the centre of all learning since
times immemorial. They
are repositories of
knowledge
.

When there is such an undertaking, there are always concerns that become prominent
in their management
. Libraries unlike companies have
an

obligation.
They

carry a
social obligation
of
storing, managing and imparting knowledge to
the society
through their

service
s

for the purpose of
crea
ting a more literate and
well
-
informed

society. In the last decade, the way libraries function
has

undergone a
significant

change. From being a lender

of books for those who wanted to fulfil t
heir
thirst for knowledge, they now
play a role akin to
community centre, information provider as well as
a place where people can come and spend time reading about topics that co
ncern

them in leisure
and with
quie
t
.

In this context the goal of this project is to help FCC
libraries
solve their
problems with
library
management and other problems
connected to the implementation of RFID
.

The goal is also

to
help
them plan and strategize
the implementation of

RFID in th
eir other libraries

and help deal with

the

management

issues

in the implementation of the same.

These issues will be studied as a case study
where we
propose recommendations

to
both improve and

better manage their libraries.

The nature
of the study will
no
t be just to

understand the i
mpacts of RFID implementation on

the library
,

but
also
to study the
subsequent managerial problems that
might arise
. Since libraries are not
-
for
-
profit
organizations, there is always a need
to
trade
-
off
between the financial
concerns and what services
they would like to offer
. This is the gap
that this

case study intends to understand and propose
recommendations for
.

Brief Project Overview:
-

This case study is
on

the operations and management of Fingal County Council librari
es. The focus is
on identifying the problems that the organization is facing in its operations, public perception,

human resource and staffing issues,

customer
management, adoption
of technology and

finances,
and to propose recommendations to solve these p
roblems.

Our primary contact is
Ms Y
vonne
O’Brien
,
Senior Executive Librarian,
who heads the operations of the libraries in Fingal County
Council.

Ms Angela Hayes is our contact for obtaining the materials regarding the organization. This
scope of the case

study is centred
on

two libraries in Fingal County

Blanchardstown and Balbriggan

libraries
.

The branch managers for these libraries are our point of contact for our case study there

they are Ms
.

Ann Byrne and Ms
.

Assumpta Hickey.

Project Objectives:
-

Perform case study of two libraries in
B
lanchardstown and Balbriggan

Identify the problems in the libraries in the above mentioned

focus areas

Give recommendations to solve these problems

In order to do this, we also have the following things that we need to deliver

1.

A work plan and a group compact to achieve the above mentioned objectives
.

2.

Contextual analysis of the same in order

to understand the function and services of the
organization and to understand the organization as such.

We will also handle the
environ
mental
scan (
PESTLE Analysis)

of the organization.

3.

A 5 m
inute presentation to highlight

the problem that the organization is facing and
how
these problems can be
address
ed
.

4.

Findings of

management practices,
and discussion about implications and answers to the
situation of the
se libraries
.

5.

concluding final report covers contextual analys
is, provides environmental scan,
discusses the findings, inferenc

sed
in the focus area.

It
will
also
contain con

In order to
achieve
the above

objectives
, we have tried to break down the
project in the following

phases of activities
:

1.

Making the first contact with the organization; developing a level
of understanding and
expectation from the

contact

person regarding the case study.

Conducting
a

basic interview
of
the

person

to develop a high level u
