Rodney Dyer:

week ending 9/5/10:

*

Obtained new Tren
dMicro OfficeScan AV client from Steve Stoy to

test.

Testing shows that the install problem has been fixed.

I

have installed it on three other machines, and my own office machine

for extended testing.

Now need to create a remove script for the

old Symantec SEP 11 AV client, and prepare package for new

OfficeScan client.

Comments to Steve Stoy about the OfficeScan

client not allowing users to scan their own network file space.

*

Worked with Jeffrey Altman to test latest OpenAFS client

to find

out if the logon token issues have been fixed.

The problem still

exists.

Jeffrey is wanting to roll out the new version soon.

I

may end up testing more this week.

*

Still working on "vmware_startup.cmd" script to allow any

version

of the VM that is local to be started by the user so that

we don't need a specific version number on the startup icons.

This is not completed, and needs to be done before the next VM

rollout.

*

A couple of RWS machines were having issues with t
he standard

bug that keeps plaguing us about not being able to connect

because a connection is already being processed.

I kicked one

of the machines, and spent quite a bit of time analyzing the

issue on the other machine.

The problem is a dea
dlock in the

"csrss.exe" (client server runtime subsystem service) binary.

It is unknown what is causing the deadlock but it appears to

be a dead thread in the terminal service routine.

*

Meeting with John Hildreth about the new HCSS Heavybuild
on our

Mosaic Virtual XP system.

Discovered bug in "VMware Folder

Sharing" that may cause some VM'ed apps problems.

Some effort

was put into testing and research, plus email to Jeffrey

Altman about the issue, with his response.

*

Completed
setup of Panopto Podiums for Steve Clarks group so

that they could RDP, and VNC into the machines.

Steve's group

has been "enabled" and now have access.

A cautionary note that

Lee Perkins created a "classhelp" account on the machine and added

the user to the "administrators" group.

This account name was

found in the admin group by our "tripwire.cmd" script, which

subsequently removed the user from the group.

I discussed this

with Lee and found out that he no longer needed the accoun
t, so

the account itself was deleted.

I advised Lee that we wanted

to be notified if machine configuration changes were made.

*

Installed ALEKS plugin on mws816 for William Gortney to test.

William tested and found no issues.

*

Comments about

the release of a global VirtualBox menu icon.

*

Provided Raven Hayes access to the Mosaic Lab Management

Application on the J: drive.

*

Some talk with Chad about the Win7 installation methods.

*

Day off Wed, Sept 1st.

*

Status report, and Tuesd
ay staff meeting.

Armando Castaneda:

Closed Mosaic tickets

Met with PCS staff to discuss work being done

Continue to conduct CSW classes.

This consumes most of the day.

with the mouse

Worked on a problem where one of the Mosaic helpdesk workstations was only showing a 3
rd

of
the cameras in the new software; was able to repair the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling
the software and applying the D

Link

configuration file that shows all the Mosaic cameras

Still in Progress: Research effort with the iPad (assignment from Jack); PCS is still working on the

Rebuilding…

I am working on Monitor 1: Linux

Monitor 2: Windows.

Hopefully

I strongly advise against running a
true dual
-
monitor setup with
Windows on both screens.

A
single screen imposes a ‘virtual

limit’ that keeps a user f
rom
overloading the system.

When
there are 2 monitors for the virtual
Mosaic XP, the system can easily
bog down.

Remote Access by faculty
and staff to their LWS
system [IP]

Chad has released alpha/beta
functionality to PCS for testing; I
have not yet tes
ted this aspect yet.

Shadowing using the Windows
client does not work, only works
on Linux.

Linux client suffers
from keyboard misrecognition (up
arrow is recognized as print
screen…).

There is a working
alternative, but it has a limit of 2
simultaneous
connections.

I feel
that is acceptable for the average
faculty member.
