Web Security
High-performance content filtering and virus protection for the
HTTP/FTP
gateway
Corporations, educational institutions, and a range of other organizations use the Internet to collabo-
rate, exchange information, foster learning, and provide online business services. Yet the Internet
can also be a conduit for attacks that put network bandwidth, employee productivity, student learning,
corporate liability, and network security at risk. Most recently, blended threats—such as the Nimda
worm, which used Web pages among its transmission routes—are posing new and challenging
hazards to network security.
Symantec Web Security protects an organization’s
HTTP/FTP
gateway against viruses and other
threats to promote secure, productive Internet access. Using scalable, integrated antivirus and
content filtering technologies that Symantec develops and supports, Symantec Web Security
simultaneously scans for both viruses and inappropriate Web content. This efficient, multi-protocol
solution enhances employee productivity, maximizes learning in educational settings, and reduces
liability exposure by analyzing and managing Internet usage. It is a solution that preserves valuable
bandwidth and improves network security by managing file downloads, reducing inappropriate Web
surfing, and helping defend against blended threats.
√ Single-scan efficiency and integrated technology effectiveness
Symantec Web Security employs a low-latency, one-time scanning process that efficiently protects
against malicious code attacks and scans Web content without draining network resources. It is the
only single-vendor solution that integrates list-based techniques and heuristic, context-sensitive
analysis tools for protecting the Web gateway from viruses and unsuitable content.
INDUSTRY-LEADING ANTIVIRUS TECHNOLOGIES
Symantec Web Security includes the protection of several proprietary Symantec technologies:
• The
NAVEX

modular scanning engine detects new virus classes and can be updated
without having to uninstall existing software, redeploy new software, or reboot the system.
• Closed-loop Digital Immune System

can automatically manage the detection/analysis/cure
process, including quarantining infected files for submission over secure lines to Symantec
Security Response.
• Symantec Striker

applies profiles to identify and help quickly root out entire classes
of malicious code.
• Symantec Bloodhound

can detect up to
80
percent of new executable file viruses,
including malicious mobile code.

√ Comprehensive content filtering technologies
Symantec’s patented, multi-lingual Dynamic Document Review

(DDR)
technology provides compre-
hensive content filtering.
DDR
exceeds simple keyword searches by analyzing context-sensitive word
relationships. It works in real time, accurately determining on the fly whether to block inappropriate Web
content, even if that content is not yet categorized in an existing filtering list.
DDR
effectively detects and
blocks new or newly accessible sites, formerly acceptable sites whose content has changed, and once-
blocked sites with new domain names.
In addition to
DDR
, Symantec Web Security provides customizable URL filter lists developed and
supported by Symantec. Administrators can screen out Web sites worldwide according to organizational
policies using 31 pre-defined categories—such as sex, gambling, and intolerance—on a system-wide,
per-user, per-computer, or per-group basis. Symantec automatically updates the software’s filter lists daily.

Symantec Web Security provides the first line of defense against Web-based viruses as
well as a tool for reporting and managing employee Internet usage. IT administrators can
define policies for users, groups, computers, and the entire organization while leveraging
standard databases and directory services such as LDAP, Active Directory, and Windows
NT
®
users/groups.
√ Centralized, policy-based management
For simple, enterprise-wide installation, configuration, and management, Symantec Web Security
provides an intuitive
HTML
-based Web interface and secure SSL support for external directories
(including LDAP, Active Directory and Windows NT users/groups). Administrators can create, sched-
ule, and enforce customized browsing profiles for individuals,
PC
s, and groups. To streamline admin-
istration even further, new centralized multi-server policy management allows administrators to auto-
matically modify scanning and filtering policies for every Symantec Web Security server within their
network—from any server that’s part of the network. Any changes made to the virus scanning or web
content filtering settings on any Symantec Web Security server are automatically propagated to all
the other Symantec Web Security servers in the network.
Administrators can also monitor and log Web activity on both filtered and non-filtered sites, as well as
use auditing and reporting tools to assess adherence to acceptable use policies. Symantec Web
Security automatically alerts administrators via e-mail when policies are breached and the AutoLock
feature can deny Internet access to accounts after repeated attempts to view blocked content. It
issues integrated antivirus and Web usage reports, which can be exported for use in spreadsheets
and other programs. And, Symantec LiveUpdate

provides continuous, up-to-date protection even
at remote locations by retrieving virus definitions on demand or as scheduled from the Symantec
Web site.
√ Improved network performance
To enhance network performance, Symantec Web Security scans only suspicious Web traffic, and
efficiently manages large file downloads.
IT
administrators can control Internet access by time of day
and day of week, providing high-bandwidth capacity during peak periods to those who need the
Internet most.
