Rationale for offering the Focus Area

Biotechnology has

been identified as a high growth industry by the U.S. Department of Labor,
with a need for biological technici
ans to grow by 19.
4% between 2002 and 2012.
(careervoyages.gov). Historically, the biotechnology industry has needed intellectual talent at
maste
r’s degree and even doctoral levels, but the growth of the industry has caused a shift in
the types of workers needed to fill critical skill gaps, with many community colleges now offering
to train biotechnology technicians. Lexington serves as a hub for
governmental, medical, and
pharmaceutical companies and has particular workforce needs in which biotechnology careers
are a key skill set. Recently, a number of these companies have contacted BCTC with needs for
workforce training, with particular concerns

about the lac
k

of skilled lab technicians to support
their operations.
