The Experimental Aspects of Tube Flaring

As part of a project investigating pulsed hydro
forming at the University of New Hampshire, a
cylindrical tube will be tested through the process of flaring. The tests will be performed on an
Instron machine by means of compression. The data will be gathered and analyzed to provide
information to the process of pulsed hydro
forming, which will allow metal materials to be
formed into a desired shape.

Experimental Process:

To prepare for the actual testing of SS
304 and
1018 steel, aluminum tubes were used to test
the entire process of the experiment. The tubes
were faced and rounded on the edges with a
lathe, they were then marked with a square grid,
flared, and the data was analyzed.

Tools and Materials:

A 30 degree angle conical punch with a 4” OD flares the
cylindrical tubes.

Stainless Steel 304 tube with a 2 ¼” OD x .065” wall

1018 Steel tube with a 2 ¼” OD x .125” wall thickness.


The Instron machine recorded data throughout
the whole flaring process. Recorded information
included: the driving force of the punch and the
punch displacement. With these data points a
graph is made to illustrate the results. Stress and
strain can be calculated and the maximum force
can be identified. Data from each tube tested is

designed to evenly flare a
metal tube. The punch is
made out of steel, which
after being carefully
fabricated on a lathe to the
appropriate specifications,
is then hardened.
